55.2-59 Door stop

I need some kind of door check arm (stop) so I don't bottom out the hinge when I open the door.
What kind works the best???

door stop is built into the hinge. same as almost every vehicle door hinge. what are you trying to accomplish?

The Hinges on this 1956 chevy truck don't have a stop, when it bottoms out it does.
Google --- Door check arm--- Thats what use to be on old cars.
now days there is a bar in the hinge with some catch places in it.

I just want something to stop the door before it bottoms out the hinge.

I'm not worryed about the drive side, it's my passenger door

Door stop? as my friend Ogre has stated, it's built into the hinge. Don't know of a door stop on any of these old trucks to begin with. If you have any type of picture you can show us, maybe somethings incorrect about how your hinge is functioning.

sounds like you need new hinges, exactly what is it "bottoming out" on?
55-59 uses the same hinges (different bolts, go figure)
the hinges open so far and stop, all controlled within the hinge
couldn't actually find a hinge pic with door open

I cut up an old belt and used it for door check straps. Didn't get a picture but you can barely see it at the edge of this photo:

My truck was missing alot of parts and I had some parts in a crate. I did not know where some of them went on the truck,I assumed that these trucks needed them and you guy's were using something so I asked. Ford has them.
I do have new hinges on both doors.

This one is missing a bracket on both ends.

MD you should have one hinge per side that has the "stop" built into the hinge.
Every 55-59 truck i have come across has had a stop built into the spring "one" per door
cant remember if it was the top or bottom hinge. But it is a Spring with a metal slide kinda deal that stops the hinge from allowing the door to open to wide. There was never a "strap" that i have ever seen that would restrict the door from opening to wide.

Btw, my 29 Model A Tudor Sedan is the only vehicle i have seen with a strap to hold the swing of the door opening to wide.

that link is for an older ford truck, 55-59 chevy trucks use the hinge as the stop
miraclepieco has a 51 chevy truck not like you have
the lever with spring 58 cameo mentions, i believe is for holding the door open, not to restrict travel

Are you able to glue a small block of rubber (such as cut out of the sidewall of an old tire) on the hinge in a spot where it will act as a bumper? Some good adhesive would probably hold it there from now on and it would be simple and the only real cost would be the adhesive.

Easier yet, a piece of the right diameter hose slit and slid over that pin should act as the stop/bumper and you can use what ever thickness hose you need as some of that fuel injection hose for newer cars is thicker than the older fuel line. If you are like me you probably have a short left over piece of hose in the stuff I couldn't see throwing away box.

All I'm trying to say is, I have done 28 years of tool and die work , machine work and lot's of fabricating, Also Ornamental Iron work.
Bottoming out a hinge or a hinge with a built in STOP is not the best thing to do with your high dollar HOT ROD.
Your passenger may open the door after you stop, on a down hill slope, and the door hit the bottom of the door hinge with a stop(hard),---That's NOT what I want to happen to my Door............
SO a Door check arm, I think, would be a very good piece of Insurance.
