what causes this?

this is on my son's 79 K20, he is having to wiggle the shift lever to start his truck, he has an automatic....anyone know what the problem is?

Remove/repair any play in your shift linkage, adjust the linkage to allow full engagement into park (for safety sake) and then adjust the neutral safety switch to allow the truck to start in park and neutral. This switch i believe sits piggyback on top of the column near the floor.
