Fuel pumps, and special tools for the fuel system.

So, im sure anyone who has one of these 90's model chevrolets over 150k miles has dealt with the fuel pump.
My '97 went out at about 200k miles in my best friends driveway 5 hours from my house.

His '96 went out around 150k a week later in my driveway, 5 hours from his house. Then again a week later, then again another week later.
(the 2nd and 3rd pumps going out were due to a poor butt splice/crimp)

He buys a 99 crew cab long bed 454/5speed, and has had it 2 days, and thinks the fuel pump is about to... with 30 gallons in the tank

We have been using a generic high pressure line tool, modified to work on these pumps, and it works decently.

Is there a special tool for this, one just for chevys?
Also, i know there is a port under the hood to check for pressure. Is there a special gauge or fitting to check for proper pressure? If so, what should pressure be?

You should use the proper tool to check pressure, BUT, you can use a set of old R-12 A/C gauges (use the low side thats blue in color)

I have about $500 invested in Quick disconnect tools some for fuel some for A/C if you do not do this for a living just use whatever works. Heres some pressure specs.

99 454

Engine NOT running 55 - 62 psi at 0 rpm
Note: Check pressure with the key ON and the engine NOT running.


97 350

Fuel Pressure
Central SFI 60-66 psi

Its '99 a maroon single rear wheel crew cab with late model 8 lug wheels.
Im actually from fort worth myself, but im deployed right now.

My '97 i mentioned is a v6 But its still running very well at 210k miles.

A 4.3 whould have the same pressure specs as the 350, I also have a 69 Custom Camper., & a 69 CST 1/2 ton awaiting resto. And thank you for defending our freedom
