ok, here is the problem....i want to make my 72 Jimmy friendlier on the turnpike

350/350 NP205 twin stick 4x4 quadrajet, w/factory cruise, 3.73

I have two choices that i see...
Gear Venders Overdrive off ofthe transfer case....3100.00
Winters quick change rear axle...............................2200.00
700R4........................................................................1700.00
Need opinions, advice on which way to go. Im leaning towards the quick change

You wont have to use an electric fan or water pump when you go 2" forward, there should be plenty of room for both, although a good electric fan set up would be nice..and I believe electric water pumps are mainly race stuff.

If you buy a gear vendors core off ebay cheap, you can send it back to gearvendors and get it rebuilt for about 2000 in total

Electric w/p was just a way to cool the heads down, after shutoff, sorta with a turbo timer. Electric fan is from a jeep in our factory shroud. Just wanted something cool on the front of my motor, so to speek!

I would say hands down a 700r4 swap would be the easiest and most economical. Or for about the same cost as a gear vendors, go with a NV4500....

I'm still not sure I get it. A 4x4 is never going to get great economy, no matter what.

I agree with ya! Im just trying to get my engine to spin at a lower RPM? but, around town I dont want a pig with 33 inch tires

700r4 if your not wheelin with it. but you can pick em up cheaper than 1700 bucks. i had one in my old k5 and my buddy that owned it b4 me went through 5 of em and i went through 3 in a year and a half running stock gears 33s and mild trail riding. good highway mannors though but keep the rpms up it likes to shift in and out of od a lot that will kill it. get a good cooler too they are tempermental in heat.

That sucks! Didnt know they werent reliable, but thats where the level 3 1700 dollars comes from

So, going up hills, would you just take it outta OD?

Not off roading is out of the question

Yea going uphill the od is too tall to keep momentum goin and I was doing 75 on the interstate driving through Tennessee and Kentucky it as in and out of od so much I said skrew it ill take the higher rpms and took it outta od

On the other hand my dads 87 has a 700 and never had a problem with it but I just know ill never own one again

The 700r4 has a good low 1st gear and a od. Heat seems to be the biggest issue with them. Get a good cooler for it and it should be fine. btw stuff is going to brake if you drive it like a teenager. i had one in a k5 on 35s with 410s and it never gave me a problem but i had a transmission cooler from b and m. that truck had 200,000+ on it. o and your going to have to find an adapter for your 205. i think they get a bad rap form guys who put big tires on there truck and don't take the 3.08 gears out of the truck and they blame the transmission.

Are you sayin to put an additional cooler with the one in the rad? Sounds like a temp.gauge would be a good mod.

Nope. Only thing that will bolt right up in your truck is another TH350.

You can get an output shaft for the trans that will allow you to bolt up the 700 to the 205. It's from advanced adapters.

BTO should build your trans with the output shaft you ship it to them.

I move my engine forward the ~1.75" and kept the trans/tcase crossmember in the stock location. No driveshaft mods needed.

What are you running for headers/manifolds? Clearance gets tighter obviously. I am running Corvette straight dump manifolds. Clear the frame rails by 1/4".

You may want to swap to 4.10s if you have 33's. Check out a RPM/GearRatio/Trans/Speed calculator to make sure you like the numbers it produces...

For instance with my 700r4, 4.56's, and 37" tires I should put out ~2200rpm at 65to70-mph

Yeah, im running the same manifolds as you. I did see that they were close to the frame, and i was considering notching the frame out alittle
