Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

On the History channel tonight was a real good look at the rise and fall and rise again of muscle cars in America. Maybe it will come back on. Gas shortages, emissions, insurance.
I was there, were you?

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

Hope they do run it again. Grew up in the 50s and 60s, graduated in '67. Three years with touring the world courtesy of my "Uncle". Back home in '70 from SE Asian tour. Rememeber leaded gas at 18.9 a gallon. Had several good cars I should have kept. 65 Impala SS 300hp/327 4 spd, 69 Mach 1 351 4 spd, 72 Monte Carlo BBC 402/400 Turbo.

Finally learned my lesson, still have '71 Chevelle SS, my '71 4x4 and '57 2 dr sedan. When I cut my self, I bleed Bow Tie Blue,

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

'68 RS SS -$150.00
'71 Dodge Demon 340 -$400.00
'69 Camaro Convertible -$350.00
'71 Challenger -$850.00

Etc ,Etc ,Etc , I was there buying Muscle cars in like new condition for less than a new set of tires today ... in the '70's a car or truck with 100,000 miles were considered worn out , we destroyed more K20's hauling firewood and plowing snow than I can even count ...

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

I remember the gas lines and prices going through the roof. People were giving away muscle cars back then. (I did) They were getting older, got lousy mileage, and they were a PITA to insure.
I don't know about the rest of the country. But in California you could only buy gas on certain days depending on the last number on your license plate. Odd or even. My buddy was lucky. His wife's car had odd, and he had even. So he would switch plates to get gas any day.

What a joke. I wonder how many cool cars went to the crusher over that nonsense.

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

I watched it, very interesting show! Yes I was there, got my permit in 1965, license in '66, graduated HS in '67. Gas was cheap, cars were cheap, and wages were low. Let a few decent cars get away from me, wish I had 'em now.

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

When I was in high school I had a Chevelle. I swore that it was history when gas hit a dollar a gallon. Nope, I totaled that one but I still have it's replacement.

Not me. Graduated in 87. Not much muscle car related in those days except the Buick GNX was faster than a Vette and Mustang came out with the Saleen and McLaren.

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

I was working in the midwest when the west coast had odd-even stuff going on. We had gas lines & shortages, but no odd-even. I remember stopping at a station on the Kansas turnpike with a Dodge van that I had added a second tank to. Total capacity was around 36 gallons iirc, and it was near empty. Purchases were limited to 5 gallons, surprise! I wasn't too happy but at least I made it to my next exit.

Re: Hot Rods and Muscle Cars

If anyone's interested, it's coming on again in just a few minutes, 3pm Pacific time on the History channel. I expect it won't be the last re-run.
