Double din stereo

Has anyone installed one in their AD?

Re: Double din stereo

not that it answers anything for you

my thoughts on double din... single din will be around for a few years more
replacement usb/mp3/g5 cellular will probably have adapters to fit single din

double din is more for the screen, i installed a screen (headrest monitor) below mine, never turn it on
fold out screens don't last, aren't worth the trouble to install imo

Re: Double din stereo

Really no room in ADs. Adding a tablet to spot in dash soon. IMHO Flat tablets will eventually obsolete everything else. Look at current car trends.

Re: Double din stereo

Concerning fold out screens.

Many sellers display single and double dins with foldout screens inside of a protecive plastic enclosure. Stereo guys say some are super delicate and dropping from line due to problems.

Re: Double din stereo

I installed a double din in my 48 but I placed it in a custom built center console.

Re: Double din stereo

I’m about to install a double din in my 72 k5. Po had hacked the crap out of the dash in an attempt so I decided to custom a cutout by eliminating the ashtray (will never need) which allowed me to keep the top ac vent. I have young kids so I plan on using the backup camera option with it.

Re: Double din stereo

I saw a couple of pics on Pinterest with double dins. I tried one in mine but it just didn’t look right. It would have taken serious fab skills far beyond my own. In the end, I decided to stick with a single mounted behind the speaker grill much like Custom Brad did on his. Just about finished mocking it up.

Re: Double din stereo

Speaking of size and space have you looked inside any of the new radios? Less than 1/3 of the case has anything in it. Rest is completely empty. With demise of CDs only the basic parts of the tuner, amp and connections are needed. Tablet style screens will replace everything electronic and mean everything.

Re: Double din stereo

Check out how ICON did their Thriftmasters. I am going to try and replicate that set up on mine. Amazon looks to have hinges that will work for the set up.

Re: Double din stereo

I can post a photo later but I made my speaker grill in my 48 fold open, hid the stereo back in there, in the seventies.

That’s the pic I saw and referenced from Pinterest.

Re: Double din stereo

I know this isn't exactly what you were asking but I put hinges at the bottom of the grille, bolted the mouldings to the grill along with the ash tray which I cut the back off of it. So you grabbed the ash tray handle to pull open the whole thing, it worked pretty good.

This is a little over the top. It's in an ICON build.

Re: Double din stereo

I installed an infrared repeater so I can keep the glove box closed and used the remote control. I also run the mic to the rear view mirror for the phone via the bluetooth. I then got a center stock speaker grill and added two small speaker in it along with the flat speakers under the seat.It sounds amazing.

It was kind of a pain to do but worth it as if I ever wanted to go back all I do is unbolt everything.
