Re: ever heard of a ticking stick ?

I've watched a bunch of her videos in the past but never that one. That was pretty cool and I can think of so many times in the past that I could have used that trick!

Re: ever heard of a ticking stick ?

Yep, another old Indian trick that is about lost. I do the same thing with a ruler, line up the same measurement along the line. If I had to do a lot like that I would take the extra time to make the tick stick (pattern). I make patterns for any repetitive cuts.

I have a hard time watching her. I landed once on another video of hers telling us all about the carpenter pencil, why they are square, and how to sharpen them "properly", which took long enough to build a wall and the result was a pencil tip that I would want to sharpen.

I like the ticking stick and did not know of it in all my years of working with wood,
So,,like you Tim I used one side of the cut to come off of and took measurements from there..
Always room to learn something new though.

I don’t know if I’ll ever use it, but that’s one I will surely remember...

Re: ever heard of a ticking stick ?

Someone should start a thread of a bunch of old tips and tricks that no one teaches like this one

That's what I was thinking yesterday when I thought of one I always do. I learned from the old guys that are mostly gone now. Most of them would have began learning in the '30s and '40s. It was always, "Here son, let me show you this old Indian trick for a better way to do that". I don't hear that term used any more, been years. Not politically correct? Should I be saying "ancient Native American method"?

I have these as two separate things. The ticking/tick stick she showed and the other is a "story Stick" like special commented. Not much difference and I can see combining the two with the straight edge of the ticking stick also being a "story stick".
