66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

Someone over torqued both front drums (all 3 bolts) and bent the wheel hubs. When I did a brake job the speed shop told me they couldn't turn the drums because they are warped (from being tightened down to the bent hubs).

I don't want to switch to late model power brakes because my truck came with PS/PB from the factory and it only has 61,000 miles on it so I want to keep it all original ...if I can find the hubs.

I've searched high and low for years and can't find these front wheel hubs (at a decent price). I've even asked a few people that sell disc brake conversion kits to give my number to people buying a kit so I could get their wheel hubs! No luck.

If anyone has front wheel hubs for a 1966 GMC, or a suggestion for finding them, please let me know. ~Johnie

Re: 66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

I have a 66 Canadian built GMC 4WD frame and drivetrain I'm parting out. Wonder if there's any difference? Has the locking hubs.

Re: 66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

I have a '66 Chevy Dana 44 front differential that I will not be using. I would be willing to sell the hubs if the ones aerotruk63 offered don't work out.

Re: 66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

I appreciate the support. thank you all!

It's a 6-lug, 2wd and the front has independent suspension (not straight axle). I've searched for an exploded view but haven't found one that shows the back of the wheel bearing hub where it's bent from all 3 bolts being over-torqued. I'll take it apart and take a photo this weekend.

K1000 would indicate a 4wd.
Were not on the same page for now.

Re: 66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

Yes agreed, a K1000 is a bit different than a C1000. And I'm not understanding the whole "it's bent from all 3 bolts being over-torqued"

Do you need hubs or drums? 6 lug drums should be readily available.

Re: 66 GMC C1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

I'm the 2nd owner of my '66 GMC (since 1998). I never knew the model and mistakenly said it was a K1000. My first vehicle was a '66 Chevy C10 shortbed but I never knew its GMC counterpart. I must have gotten the K1000 from Rock Auto when ordering parts.

The reason I mentioned it's history is to explain the how problem could be a factory caused issue on such an old truck (but only 61,000 miles though). It was the factory rivets, not over tightened bolts, that caused the wheel hubs to warp (bend). They were so overdone that they bent the wheel bearing hub (yes, the same thick part of the wheel hub that the 6 lug studs are attached which sounds a little crazy I know). It had to have been done by the factory because once the rivets are removed, as you all know, there's no reason to ever redo them. I always wondered why the wheels got so hot and why I was going through shoes so quickly. When I tried to have the drums turned and found out they couldn't because they were warped, everything became crystal clear.

Unable to find replacement wheel hubs, my truck has been left to sit with only occasional attention to keep it maintained over the past 15 years or so and that's why my memory was a little hazy.

Anyways, that's where it sits today and why I need wheel bearing hubs for both front wheels. I already have new drums, shoes and everything else. I didn't have time to take it apart to take photos but I'll do it as soon as I can ...if for no other reason than to show how bizarre it is!

So you need 2 front hubs for a 66 1/2ton gmc two wheel drive, correct?

'63-'70 hubs will be the same. I'll take a look and see what I can come up with.

Correct. I should have described it as you did here. It's also a fleetside longbed but I think they're the same wheel bearing hubs on all 2wd models.~Johnie

Thanks for checking. If anyone reading this has Admin permissions I'd appreciate it if you can change the original thread title from K1000 to C1000. ~Johnie

I don't think they used letters with GMC just numbers .

Re: 66 GMC K1000 front wheel hubs (Please)

The 4th was just another day of work for me. I haven't bothered to pull those hubs off since you did not say whether you wanted them or not. Yes I would go with new bearings and seals. If you do want those hubs you need to let me know.
