Burb bolts

Is there a source for the round headed carriage bolts for the rear floor of a Suburban? How about the flat head carriage bolts for the rear floor at the door sill? Am I going to have use large flat head bolts instead?

Re: Burb bolts

I was able to resource them at a local hardware store. They came with full length threads. For more information you can look at my posts in the on the first page of the "Working Man's Burban" thread.
Good luck.

Re: Burb bolts

Thanks. So they were just regular flat head bolts but with no screwdriver slot?

I'm asking about the flat head carriage bolts that are on the angle piece along the back of the plywood floor. There are 7 of them. They have a flat head, non slotted and are a carriage type bolt. The local hardware store doesn't carry them but they are called elevator bolts but the pictures I've found online don't match up to the correct bolts.

Re: Burb bolts

My are the round headed style. I am assuming that they are original but they could have been replaced at some point. If your doing a restoration you might be able to use a regular carriage bolt and have the top fly cut on a mill to match your originals.

Can't modify regular carriage bolts because the original bolts are countersunk. Maybe I can get slotted or phillips head bolts and fill in the screwdriver slot with my welder.

Now there is a great website. The No. 3 Plow bolts would be perfect if they were 1/4 - 20 size or maybe even 5/16". The smallest is 3/8" and that's too big. Thanks for the links Richard!

Re: Burb bolts

I didn't realize that they were counter sunk. I'm sorry, my bad. If you go the straight counter sunk head try an Allen head version it would be easier to fill than a slotted version. I think "plow bolt" is the correct name. This link may help. Try calling them as they claim to have more sizes than listed, or maybe a metric size. Good luck and please tell us how you do.

Paul,
McMaster is my go to place for a lot of stuff but they can be kinda pricey on a lot of stuff. Good thing is they are right in NJ and even ground shipping I have it next day. It looks like the link that HO455 posted does go down to 5/16".

You might even call Mc Master since they are almost next door to you to see if they have them smaller. Good Luck

Richard

Re: Burb bolts

I picked up some regular flat head bolts and went a size larger, 5/16". The angle doesn't match very well. They will be ok till I source something better. Makes me wish I still had access to a machine shop.

Re: Burb bolts

Vintage Trailer Supply carries them in 1/4 20 in 1 1/2" and 2". They're listed as floor repair bolts I believe. They sell 50 in a bag. They're used to fasten the plywood floor to the metal frame......... Just like our Subs........ lol. I have some left over from my Airstrem restoration. Not sure what length I have. How many do you need? I'll mail them to you for free if I have enough.

Re: Burb bolts

60s Iron I only need seven that go across the back of the rear door sill area. Tue bolts are different though. The ones on their website are flat headed with a large flat head. The ones on the Burb look like flat head, counter sunk carriage bolts. Maybe this style would work though. I could pound the counter sunk area flat on the metal strip and fill the recessed area in the plywood with a good outdoor quality wood putty or fiberglass.

The 5/16" size here would work but they come in boxes of 100. I'd have to restore 14 Suburbans!

Re: Burb bolts

I looked at them today. I don't NEED them, but I bought a stainless bolt kit and those are not in there (I don't think), but I would probably replace them if you bought the bulk and sell them
