Need opinions on used 700R4
Hello from Abilene TX!
'69 C10 longbed with a newly-rebuild stock 350, a good TH400, and 3.73 open rear gears - NEEDS an overdrive! I picked up from Craigslist what I was told was an '84 700R4 out of a monte carlo with a 305 V8. The fluid looked good, and there was very little stuff in the pan - which looked like it hadn't been off in a long time. After ClineBarger's comments in the 700R4 thread, I was planning on installing the TransGo shift kit and plate, converting it to hydraulic TCC lockup, and everything else I could do to the valvebody, then swapping it into the truck - assuming that its clutches and bands had some life left in them. Today I started pulling it apart and found that it has the L4/V6 band apply piston, not the V8 one - which makes me really leery of the rest of the insides of it, if it started life behind a V6 and then got stuck behind a V8. I've rebuilt everything else on an old car, but I've never been any deeper into an automatic than the valve body - and not sure I want to dive into one at this point. So I figure I can (1) get a V8 apply piston and forge ahead with the original plan, (2) Get this one completely rebuild by somebody who knows what they're doing, (3) rebuild this one myself, or (4) leave the working TH400 in there and keep getting 10 mpg. Opinions?

Re: Need opinions on used 700R4
The surface area of the clutches should be the same between a 6 cyl, 305 and 350
Upgrade the throttle/boost valve and servo and it should be OK for a stock build 350. The TransGo 700R4 junior is a good kit. Don't buy the big shift kit. It's meant for racing applications. What's the broadcast code on the corner of the case?

Re: Need opinions on used 700R4
From the 700R4 rebuild thread;
"554 Piston. Has the Smallest Apply Area, Has the Weakest clamping force on the Band, Used on 4 & 6 cylinder applications. DO NOT USE behind a V8!!!" I've got the 554 piston. I'll get that broadcast code.

Re: Need opinions on used 700R4
Buy one out of a 91-93 Caprice/Roadmaster/Fleetwood. Has all the updates/strongest factory parts for a 700R4. Of course, there are a lot better parts you can put in...

Re: Need opinions on used 700R4
A lot of the early V8 700R4's ('82-'86) had 554 2nd pistons especially fullsize sedans (Caprice/Impala etc.)
Early 700R4's are difficult to decode the application, Your 4YK165BT would be 1984, The only V6/I4 engines with 700's were the 2.8L & 2.5L & had 60 degree bellhousings......The 4.3L hadn't came out yet & the 229 V6 had TH200C's behind them, It a pretty safe bet your 700R4 is from behind a 305 SBC. It will have a 6 clutch 3-4/5 clutch forward/5 clutch Low-Reverse/4 clutch Reverse Input just like all V8 700R4's. Whether or not the Cast Iron Pump Rings can handle a large ratio TV boost valve like a .500" is anyones guess...... A 093 2nd piston will help the Band & 3-4 clutches live longer! |

Thanks for the input, I feel better about this thing now.
Clinebarger, I'd be interested in PMing you about maybe building me a transmission, but your PM's are full. My email is jamyers63@gmail.com if that's easier for you.
