Underbed gas tanks...yes again

Are you going to do it like they did on Trucks one day, where they used a cleaner, then some kind of black liquid to fill the metal on the inside?

I've restored some hopeless antique motorcycle gas tanks and have developed a real good set of techniques for them. I actually started on the tank today.



Step 1 is to clean it thorougly on the outside with a strong mixture of muriatic acid and water and a scotchbrite.

Step 2 is to pour muriatic acid into the tank and slosh it every which way repeatedly to get all of the nooks and crannies clean

Step 3 is flush with running water for a couple of hours to dilute and flush the acid out

Step 4 is cook in the oven for several hours at 300 degrees to get it thoroughly dried out

Step 5 is POR15 tank sealer. This stuff works like no tomorrow. It will even seal small leaks

Step 6 is powdercoat the outside for beauty

Currently, mine is cooking in the oven stage. I have the POR15 ordered and am waiting delivery. After that I will shoot some powdercoat on it and cook it again and reassemble with new sending unit and gaskets. More pictures to come as I get the stuff and get it finished.

POR 15 is da bomb! Used it on my vintage motorcycle tank a few years back and it still looks brand new.

Thx Markeb01. It appears to be different. I will keep searching the forums. I don't mind the filling thru the bed so I think I will go with the summit kit. This is my first build so I'm learning as I go.

I'm (99.9%) buying a trailer this weekend, and will need to ad some type of hitch.

I hope to move my tank, for more legroom in the cab.

My underbed tank did not interfere with my receiver hitch but I guess it would depend on the tank. I used on from Rick's Hot Rod Shop.

If the 6x-66's are anything like the 67-72's, removing the tank won't gain you any additional leg room. The top of the seat hits the rear cab wall (under the back window) @ the same time the lower portion of the seat hits the tank. I suppose adjustable (forward tilting) seating would allow the seat to be positioned farther back @ the expense of a more upright seating position.

about six months ago i had to replace the gas tank in son n laws 69 mustang. i also had to rebuild the flange area of the trunk, because as most of you know the tank is the trunk floor & the tank sets on the flanges in the tank well. the tank comes with holes for the fasteners already in the flanges. it looks like with trimming the frame rails back then the tank could "slide" into the frame rails & then nut & bolt to rail. that way you wouldn't need the retaining straps. with a little rubber insulation under the flange & a rear filler this looks like the best setup to me. wadda yall think?

I have a '89 seat. My original was replaced with junk buckets, when I got the truck.

this is a RCI 17 gallon tank from Summit ---30"x17"X7"


I trimmed the frame rails on the bottom --frame is 34" to outside -- tank in 30"--I had the angle side braces welded on locally

Hate to revive an old thread but, Sir, could you elaborate on this install, please? I've seen Falcons in the salvage I go to, but it didn't occur to me to check out the tanks.

Man, you MAY have just saved me a LOT (more) searching with this link.

My truck isn't a 60-66 but the issue I have an issue that maybe applies to some of you guys: My '46 truck came with some kind of F*rd tank between the frame rails and behind the rearend and it fits pretty good. Problem? It has the F*rd ring type sending unit retainer instead of the typical GM/Universal 5 hole type fuel sender mounting.

I had the truck pro rewired when I bought it last summer and I bought TPI-Tech gauges. I because I knew I wanted the original factory cluster restored (in the future) but it was too costly then. So I went with the lower buck TPI gauges. They all work fine - no issues, and they even look pretty good in my opinion, see here: http://www.tpigauges.com/prod03.htm

I just haven't figured out how to make their five hole sending unit mount in my type of tank? I've searched Summit, Jegs, North Hollywood Speedometer, and other places for an adapter or something and no luck. MAYBE this place has or will make something for this application?

Have any of you guys figiured out how to solve this problem on the cheap? I think the gauges are 240/30 ohm. ANY help would be appreciated. - Dan

without having seen your parts i think the answer would be to transfer the 5 hole sender assy over to a lock ring type. go to junk yard & get a sender assy that fits your tank. then remove everything on it except maybe the suction tube if equipped. then transfer the sender from the five hole unit over to the lock ring one. all it is being used for is to hold the sender in place so it should just be simple mechanics. be sure to install the lock ring unit in the tank before you transfer the sender so you can see how it fits & index the sender float in the proper position. i spose it should sit sideways to the tank so you dont get "slosh readings". i did this a long time ago on a military jeep that we put a civy fuel tank in. hope this helps!
