Snowmageddon headed to the South

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/03...o-florida.html

Oh boy, the grocery stores must be swamped and the tow truck companies and body shops are thanking God for the income they will surely see.

I'm a little thankful myself, because I believe that winter storms keep skiing in the minds of southerners and they are more likely to come skiing and book a condo when they do.

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

It's actually supposed to completely miss us for once. No ice, no snow. Nada.

This was last years storm that was only supposed to be a dusting.

It's so cold though. I've lived in SC since 1999 and this is the longest cold streak of 20-35* highs I can recall. It's normally really cold for a 2-3 days, then in the 40s/50s a bit, then a few cold days... not 2-3 weeks of below 40. I moved to get away from that crap

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

Here is a good report without drama. It isn't supposed to come much past I-95, bad on the coast with high winds and most snow. The storm is actually a marine storm. I don't expect much at all. I got milk the other day. I need blueberries! I'm supposed to get propane tomorrow. Ran out Saturday. It's just for my kitchen stove.

http://www.wbaltv.com/article/bitter...storm/14529398

Snow in the lowlands does spark peoples' interest in skiing. Only the serious skiiers go no matter how wintery or not.

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

It is really hard to tell with the wind drifting the snow but it looks like we have about 8-9'' overnight and it is not supposed to stop until late this afternoon. I am ready for 2019 already, been a bad start to the year and today no different.

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

I'm a HOT weather person. I lived in PA all my life so I can deal with the cold and snow.
But this wind is absolutely terrible!
I hate the wind even if it's warm out.

Not much snow here maybe 3" at the most but I've got 10"-15" drifts in my yard and nothing at all in some spots.
Why can't the deep drifts be somewhere I don't hafta shovel.

Our power went out for about a min. today.
But came rite back on.
Those few seconds got me thinking...
Get home after work quickly set up the generator, then start shoveling snow before it gets too dark.
Then as the power came back on I'm thinking cool at least i can shovel the snow with a lil' daylite left.
I got it all done rite at dark.
Definitely gonna finish my plow project for my mighty lil' garden tractor AND pick up a snow blower this yr. as
I have TWO boys and i never get any help shoveling.

That little squall we had Saturday prompt me too fill up on propane and gen. fuel before I even knew this was coming.

I think ole' man winter needs a gender change.

I'm a warm weather guy myself. I can find a place to get cool.
I don't like having to layer up to be comfortable in the cold. It just wouldn't do for me to have to work up north in winter months.

How dare you assume winter's gender??? Moderators! We need an intervention here!

I had to be out last night but my car did fine, a little wheel slip on a hill was all. The wind was rather intimidating but the drivers all went slow and stayed back off my rear bumper (I went very slow too). Power went off last night for about 30 minutes....I heard the neighbor's propane generator kick on within 5 seconds of the power loss.

I'd like to get a generator....been thinking about one for a while now.

Yep, figured I would've went to leave this morning and the wind would have put it all right back, lucky me didn't happen at all.

Ten ring, I can't decide who is worse, ole' man winter or the great mother nature. The great mother seems to be on heaven and hades side lately, but with all she provides I can't pick on her as much as the ole man who definitely isn't my favorite

If often thought about quitting this and running too a warm and sunny place for good, but life and all that I know has always and always will be is here.

10* here not as bad as yesterday but still windy.

Driving through the area there is stuff blowed EVERYWHERE

And sometimes playing in the snow and being a dummy getting myself highsided is fun......at times.

I don't like having to strip down and still be hot. It just wouldn't due for me to have to work down south in summer months.

Just thought it would be fun to turn that around. I think we are all room temperature guys with a tolerance factor of about 10 degrees plus or minus. I look at dogs. Yeah, they have fur but they wear that all summer and go barefoot year 'round. I look at birds out there at 5 degrees or when it's 40 degrees and raining. They're out there hopping around pecking up seeds. They never go inside all winter long. They are out there all night long in these 50 mph winds, skinny legs and all . How do they do it?

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

Before Christmas I was building a big shed at a golf course where it is always windy. It got cold back on that job and I was really bundling up and the only thing I liked about it was it kept me warm. Climbing around over and under things while framing, reaching , bending to pick things up, it was all a harder. Gloves on and off, too, because some things you just can't do with gloves. The wind would die down and off with the hooded jacket and gloves, even the Carharts. Cloud passes or breeze picks up and it's put it all back on if it doesn't pass.

I'm about tired of it all now. I've been hanging loose in this cold, mostly staying home. I look back now and don't know how I did it all my life and didn't complain. I had the best attitude and I accepted it. It made me feel good to know I could take whatever Mother Nature threw my way in stride. I'm still that way, but now am choosing to avoid it whenever I can!! I'm not out to prove much of anything anymore. I like my fuzzy slippers!

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

Is this building your contract Tim ? I see a truck sitting there that costs money to just sit if it's a rental is why I ask .. I have had to stop work more than once and go to one that didnt require trying to stay on a metal roof when its icey or even wet..
If you can stand the time off,, then by all means do it ,,safety first.. warm fire next to first ..

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

Yeah, it was a half day rental with only 7 straight trusses (41') including the gable and the valley trusses for up onto the existing roof. We knew the snow could come but it was cold dry powder. We didn't need to be on the metal and used a leaf blower to keep snow clear. The area where the roof ties in was plywood with roll roofing (yes, for temporary) and 2 x 6 plates for each valley truss (24" o.c.), so good footing. It's my friend's contract. I would have gotten the 7 trusses set and braced back into the building, then stacked the valley trusses at the edge of the old roof. He had us going all day, snowed all day. Gloves kept getting wet and changed till I had nothing dry. My fingers were killing me and the other guy working with us was saying (to me) he had enough. Finally I said time to pack up because nobody else was going to. I told him I thought working 7 hours in the wind blown snow was pretty good and we all still have to deal with the long drive up the road...where our snow would be worse. I would have called it a day once everything was up and secure and paid the crew for the day.

I would say you got a lot done in the 7 hours and it was time to hang it up and prevent a accident from being tired and cold fingers ,cold everythng and all ..

You made the right decision Tim ,,and you left it safe from any high wind too..

Re: Snowmageddon headed to the South

It was an 80% chance of snow that morning and I told Pat, my friend who's job it was, he should move the crane to the next day. It was only supposed to be maybe an inch over night. Well, he didn't and it ended up snowing all day. It was so dry it wasn't slippery. But that works right up until somebody slips. I kept blowing and sweeping the snow away but it kept coming. There were some guys golfing and I told Jim, the other guy, those guys must be nuts. Then I said I'm sure they're thinking the same about us working up on a roof in the snow. I would have put my foot down sooner but it wasn't that bad.

With this last storm this thread is about I got about 1". The wind was what made it a cyclone. This is quite a cold snap. Later next week we might see mid-50s. Up at my mom's they are having highs in single digits with negative lows. That is c-c-cold for Maryland!

Tim, if you can afford ,stay home by the fire until you can get back on that job.. I know it's hard as I have been told before to just wait a bit before I fall them trees ,,or on a roof ,,roofing ,,wind makes it dangerous to do anything in it,, it has the control over you and also it loves OSB and Plywood ,,and especially Visqueen
