Clear coat aluminum?

Getting to the final pieces of rebuilding the top end of an engine for my 66 c10 and I'm wondering what to do with the intake. I bought a topend kit from summit with edelbrock estreet heads , intake, comp cam/lifters, timing set, gaskets blah blah blah and I have two choices with the intake. Leave it bare and it will oxidize over time or clear coat it and have it potentially peel and look worse sooner. Love to hear opinions on this.

I painted mine to match my block, but of the two options you listed, I'm for letting it oxidize over time. I did that for a long while before I painted mine.

Re: Clear coat aluminum?

I powder coated an aluminum intake for a friend. Used a product color named "almost chrome". The factory recommendation was to use a clear powder coat on top. I left the clear off and it looks like aluminum. Looks great and cleans up well. Just remember to block off the carb heat. Nothing stands up to that heat!

I have also powder coated intakes Chevy Orange and I liked that as an option as well.

Re: Clear coat aluminum?

I used clear satin ceramic paint and it's held up well so far - about three and a half years.

Re: Clear coat aluminum?

It's always the heat crossover that gets ugly first. I blocked mine with a "high perfomance" gasket and it did stay nicer looking, but then I live in California where we don't really need them anyhow.

The intake in this kit has provisions for the heat crossover but the heads don't so I don't have to worry about that. 🤭

You can get the intake anodized in a number of different colors.

.

After reading through this, I would be inclined to give it a try. 300 degrees F max seems reasonable and if their claims are accurate, the coating would act as a high performance clear.

This does appear to be a quality product but at $80 per pint its in a higher tier than my needs. It's for extremely nice showstopper vehicles.
