700R4 Pressures, need opinions

At Idle, TV adjusted and connected
Park: 85
R: 130
N: 85
4th 85
3rd 85
2nd 130
1st (original shift mechanism won't allow 1st gear)

At Idle, TV disconnected
Park: 80
R 125
N 75
4th 78
3rd 78
2nd 130
1st (again, cant shift into 1st)

Fast Idle (1500rpmm), TV cable pulled out
Park: while pulling the cable out, pressure rose to 150, then the gauge needle started fluctuating wildly from 20-200 psi
R: 195
N: Same as in Park
4th: 160
3rd: 160
2nd: 137

Thoughts, opinions?

Re: 700R4 Pressures, need opinions

I was going to refer you to the Bow Tie Overdrive site for some reading to determine the proper pressure ranges but after looking a bit through there, I didn't find any recommendations! Should be there, but I couldn't find 'em.

I know they ( Bow Tie ) and others recommend using the gauge to properly setup the TV system on your 700r tranny, however many others out there don't feel it is absolutely necessary, especially for a driver ( i.e. not high performance race application ).

Some others here will chime in I'm sure, but in the absence of sound pressure advice, my 2 cents are to adjust the TV cable so that at WOT it is fully pulled tight ( full pull away from the transmission at the carb linkage at WOT ). Test drive the truck and adjust the thing from there to get the driving characteristics you want.

You'll want to have the ratchet type adjustment thingy there at the carb so you'll have the small incremental adjustment "clicks" available to you for the fine adjustments post WOT setting. Bow Tie and others sell them I think.

Here's a discussion that may lend some cred:

Here's a discussion on this board that has some pressure guidelines:

Are you having a problem? I don't have my charts with me but nothing stands out as out of the ordinary. Does it have hot-rod parts? Stock min-TV is usually 65-70 in park/neutral

Re: 700R4 Pressures, need opinions

My bad, I should have included the background info.

Used transmission just swapped in behind a stock 350. Haven’t driven It yet.

Trans has a New pump, and I went through the valve body and reworked it according to Transgo shift kit and Clinebarger’s instructions for a basically stock transmission.

I’ve Confirmed the TV cable operation with the trans pan off, with WOT burying the tv plunger and idle just pushing it in a tiny bit.

Two things I’m wondering about: the wildly fluctuating pressures in P and N, and shouldn’t the highest pressures be higher? I’ll retest at actual WOT and see if more rpm does anything.

I’m probably just being nervous, cause I’d hate to screw this trans up

Re: 700R4 Pressures, need opinions

They look in the ballpark to me. The fluctuations are normal pressure pulsations from the pump. More noticeable at higher pressures and slower RPMs

Re: 700R4 Pressures, need opinions

Thanks! Drove it around the yard a bit today, seems to be good. Will do an extensive road test tomorrow.

Re: 700R4 Pressures, need opinions

Did a road test yesterday, and all seems well, hooray! Shifts nicely through all gears, and the pickup happens seamlessly in 3rd or 4th gear.

I’m pretty happy with the results so far, at 70 mph the revs are 2100 in 4th gear and locked up instead of the old TH400’s 3000 rpm. MUCH quieter and calmer driving experience!

Thanks everybody for advice / opinions / assistance!
