small journal 327 build

hey guys, im currently working on an engine build and would like some input on cam choice. the build itself is going to be mostly stock. its a small journal 327, forged crank, new rods and pistons. the pistons are flatops with valve reliefs. all machine work has been done and everything is fresh. the block has been bored 30 over, giving a 331ci. since this project is being built for fun, im not dropping a lot of money into it. i will be using the stock 462 heads again, they also have been cleaned and trued up. i will be using an aluminum dual plane intake and a 600 cfm carb. the idea of the build is to place in a lightweight car like a chevy 2. this will be a 3 speed auto (th350) and 3.73 rear.

with that said, i have been toying around with the cam choice. i will be staying with the flat tappet. ive been thinking about some such as the 268H, xe268, and L79 (#151). im obviously not looking for "500 hp" but want a good little street engine with good low end pull. i have used these cams in the past, but never in a 327. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: small journal 327 build

THe 268H is the largest I would go, would prefer the 260H for the 331. I would not use any XE cam...268H is OK for a 350, and great for a 400!!!

If you are wanting good low end, the HE268 may be ok but the XE268 may be a bit much.

Re: small journal 327 build

Im in the process of building a small journal 327 myself...One thing i did notice is that there are not many options for pistons that are not the "rebuilder" pistons that put the piston wayyy down in the bore and you end up with a motor that has a quench of > .060 and horrible compression ratio. I ended up going with speedpro H660cp30 pistions. They put my pistons .025 in the hole (undecked block) and will allow me to maintain around a .040 quench. I am running aluminum trick flow heads and went with a .458 lift cam with 284in/284ex duration(218 @ .050) and a 110 lsa. Im using 1.6 rockers so that will effectively make my lift more like .498...

Re: small journal 327 build

Most of these builds , are for a heavy truck.....in a lite weight Nova/3.73 gear, with a little looser converter I think you can use a little more cam I ran an XE 268, in my 383, & I do agree that it might be too much for the 331 , for your app. I would suggest an XE-262,or Lunati equivelant & hit your stall around 24-2500....should be fun to play with.... Re: small journal 327 build

The L79 cam is always a good choice, but on the Corvette boards the preference is for the L46 cam which is similar in overall valve events but has different ramps. For a budget build in a lighter car this looks good to me.

Re: small journal 327 build

That L-46 camshaft , that MIKE C listed is one bad azz street cam! However, I feel that the modern profiles on the cams , show us more? The newer cams , show more vacumn/idle quality....& more low end response, & dont really mess with the top end too much? Not here to argue/or fight....just my opinion....longhorn

Re: small journal 327 build

With smaller displacement in heavy vehicles I've always built like it was a 4x4 and they run out great!
