Temp gauge question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am installing a 89 motor into a 79 truck (both chevy), can i use the 89 temp sending unit to operate my 79 water temp gauge (will it read correctly) or do i need to use the 79 sender unit the gauge was made for. These are all stock parts. If i need to use the 79 unit is putting in the water pump good enough. 89 is 3/8 inch & 79 is 1/2 inch & there is a 1/2 inch plug in the water pump.
