testing a TH700R4 ?
I got a guy at work that might be ablwe to get me a TH700R4 for free! (I know I know.) Anyway, Was not in one of his trucks so He's not sure if its any good or not. How would I go about checking to see if its anygood before I stuff it in the 74? Also. do I need to change the driveshaft if I swaping out a TH350?

I don't know of any sure fire method of checking a trans not in a vehicle. Rest assured they did not pull it out for no reason. If you can pull the pan then take a look at the color of the fluid and see if there is any metal in it. Also see if it is dark or smells burnt. If it is free I would take it any way. The core is worth $100 or $150 towards another one. I just swapped a th350 for a 700r4 in my son's 280Z and the yolk is the same, but I had to shorten the drive shaft a couple of inches.

first question why did u double post but heres what i said to ur last post
if the transmission is used do not take the chance of just putting it in and hoping it works. get it rebuilt anyways it probably needs it. that way you will know whether or not its ok. the only way to actually tell is to pull it all apart and look aside from the fluid but that doesnt always tell the story because someone could have recently changed it. i would not take the chance get it rebuilt and be done with

A lot of the higher-end and better-quality tranny shops I've been around have tranny dynos for testing units prior to installation. There's no way they'll go to the trouble of installing a rebuilt tranny without knowing for a fact that it's right first. They can check shift points, pressures, proper operation and the like. That might be worth looking into. They might just charge a flat-fee for checking one out. At the very least, change the fluid and filter, and look for any damage while doing that. I'd also get the proper service manual and doing any band checks or adjustments that are called for. If it's free, you're not out anything but the labor to install it, and if it doesn't work, you can then have it rebuilt or trade it in on a rebuilt.

WHEN I SWAPPED OUT MY 700R4 FOR A T350 I HAD TO LENGTHEN THE DRIVESHAFT 2'' IT WAS A SHORT TAIL SHAFT T350 6'' I THINK

You won't need to change yokes but you will need to modify the driveshaft, depending on which TH350 you had. With my TH400->700R4 swap, I actually had to cut a bit of length out and swap yokes...
