1982 C10 project, Laying frame with 5.3l swap

I need another project like I need a hole in the head, but what the hell. I bought a new daily driver. I have wanted one of these for a while now, they are surprisingly hard to find in a 2wd Short Wheel Base. its a 1982 C10 with a 350/th350 combo. the guy I bought it from said his Grandpa bought it new in Florida and it has 455,000 miles on it Ha Ha its a cool start because its exempt on emissions, only needs safety. there is one big hint on why it needs no emissions. I wonder who will pick it up. first things first, It will get a new interior since I have a few laying around. Anyway I'm tired so here it is. How do I get this think as close to the ground as I can with out 4 linking the rear? where do I start? I have allways lifted my trucks, this is a first at lowering

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

looks like it used to be a diesel,
hydro boost in a half ton.
if you look at the pics you can see a HEI distributor.
The 350 converted diesel was an olds engine not a converted SBC

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

Yes, it was a diesel engine, the Po tore it out at 300k miles when it poped and replaced it with a impala SB. The swap was done so shiity, none of the gages work, the ignition is a 14/2 romex wire that goes straight from the ing. To the starter. Lol needless to say I keep a fire ext. In the truck. I'm going to to to the junk yard this weekend and pull a full harness out of a gas engine truck because this wiring is so so bad. Nothing works in the truck. The suburban will be at the painters this weekend so I hope to swap out the harness and get the truck driving in time for work Monday. Has anyone done that? Is it hard? If I take everything out of my cab and how long will it take to install the new harness? Are they a ***** to R& R?

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

Just got off the phone with my friend who builds rockbcbuggys. He said if I buy some beer and material, he will C-notch the frame and four link the rear. He said he could maybe build me some nice A-rms also. I'm glad I has some good friends. Now where to buy airbags? I know nothing about this type of thing, I have always been into tall trucks. Is there a page that will explain air bag systems that I can read through? I understand how they work, I don't know what size tanks, compressors, valves hose ect. Sorry sor my lack of punctuation, I'm on my phone

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

So while driving this truck, I have noticed a 4th shift... at about 65-70 mph. It was puzzling because the column would only touch 3 gears. I was thinking it had a gear-venders overdrive. So I crawled under the truck after work tonight and found a 200R4... It makes sense because the 200r4 came on olds and buicks, and since the 6.2 diesel was made from a 350 Oldsmobile block, so maybe thats why its in there? but i have only read about the 6.2L coming with a 700r4? Interesting. this truck is so Frankensteined together Nothing would surprize me.

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

The 6.2 and 6.5 were actually clean sheet designs by Detroit Diesel, as diesel engines. They were designed to bolt right to SBC/BBC motor mounts and bellhousing but that is all that is shared with the gas motors.

If the motor came out of a car like you were told, a lot of RWD GM cars in the 80's did use a 2004R which might explain why it's in the truck now. The 2004R comes with a universal bellhousing that will bolt to Chevy and BOP motors but I have heard of some with BOP only cases.

The Po said that the trans was not changed but he knew absolutely nothing about cars so that may be what happened. I'll pull the valve covers this weekend and find out what this motor actually is. I'm going to sell the motor and transfer to fund a 5.3/4l60e combo

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

So I don't know if anyone has been following my Suburban build but today I got the engine bay painted, and something amazing happened. out in the field behind the parking lot was a 78 C10 in primer. I told the guy painting my truck I sad,"hey I'm building a C10 thats just like that" The guy say "oh yeah? that ones going to scrap" i was like WHOA why and he told be that the guy that owned it paid them like 3k to smooth it over shave the tailgate, doors fire wall fenders. I mean this think is clean!!! not a spot of rust and the body work looked amazing! So long story short, I have 2 C10s now... the tailgate is smoothed over and the latch is on the inside now. they really did work. today was a good day!!! here is a picture. its complete, the doors and front clip were kept inside.

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

good find on the second truck!! This project looks like it's good to go with that second truck and your buddy who is willing to notch and link the rear. Make sure to take pics of the progress and keep us posted.

Both of them... His and hers. LOL Actually My friend will probably end up with one, Slammed trucks are not so common where I live, and when you see one its the Hydraulics/gold 100 spoke wheels kind of truck. So
we'll build some the right way and go tear up the car shows

Re: 1982 SWB 2wd Project "Exempt"

Worked on the C10 some tonight. picked up a new front clip with new harwood fiberglass 3" cowl hood. I also scored a 5 lug 12 bolt 4:11 posi rear end to replace my open 10 bolt. I need to figure out how to do a cheap rear disk conversion before I install it. anyone have any ideas? also what brake proportioning valve would I use?

Before,

After, don't let the shine fool you. I gust wiped it down so its wet.

Difference it height between my trucks,
