Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Thanks for the shock suggestions - I went with a set of Rancho shocks but am reconsidering (may use these on the K10). Not much new aside from wet sanding. Decided to go with single stage Imron for the paint - should be posting orange pics here in ~3wks. Here's a couple more including the dusty rebuilt Spicers and a frame shot that shows the addition of a correct 4wd exhaust hanger on the opposite side of the frame for the dual exhaust.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Just subscribed to your thread. Very nice build! Are you going solid paint or orange/white? Your SPID looks very similar to my K20. Look forward to watching the progress.

Thanks. Agreed SPID very similar - more so now that I've added buckets, aux battery, camper harness, Am/Fm, manual throttle, No-SPIN, and a tach: your K20 is optioned out! Interesting that neither of our trucks came with locking front hubs.

I'm keeping the orange/white scheme....single stage. Should have paint before the month is over.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Orange/White is a great color combo. A good friend of mine has an orange/white K20 he bought new. Are you going back to the original type white steel wheels? I have a set of black wheel vintiques going on in the next week or so.
I bought my truck from the original owner back in 05', sold it, then bought it back. The speed warning/air gauge was added recently. The warn "orange" hubs were dealer installed and on the purchase agreement.

Pete, looking good. Did you rechrome the spicer retainers and paint the dials or find a good original set?

Great story! I have five white freshly powder coated OEM 16.5 x 8.25 wheels with new 33" BFG ATs ready to go. These aren't on the chassis yet. Tire choices in the 16.5" wheel are very limited now - no more 10" widths

Jud that's a really solid original set I was fortunate to find. The retainers did not suffer flaking chrome from being overtightened. If it would help, I can recommend a chrome shop that does good work at a very reasonable price. They did my bumpers. I'll get pics of the 700R4 for you this week when I drop off the battery tray and a manual throttle set up.

Pete, thats always good info. I too was fortunate in that my K20 retainers are super nice. I will need a chrome shop for my 67 GMC stuff proabably. Sounds good on the trans. Did you find a 4 speed auto lens for your steering column yet? The one on LMC appears to be for an aftermarket column. Also do you have to modify the shift linkage itself?

Jud see this link for details re: my plating experience and feel free to send me a PM with any questions: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=495482

Haven't tracked down the lens yet - I assumed the LMC part was a straight-up swap for an original lens on a tilt column but maybe I'm mistaken. Will keep you posted on this and the details of the linkage. The motor isn't back from the machine shop yet so the drive train isn't yet installed. We'll attempt to use the OEM linkage but if that doesn't work I'll go with the set up supplied by BTO.

The cab is now undercoated with some kevlar impregnated bed liner - the bed to follow. OEM bucket seat brackets are in place. Will have paint here soon!

Pics for Jud of the BTO K-case level II 700r4 tranny - looks like bare finish no paint. Note the flex plate cover.

Re: 72 K20 Cheyenne Super Build

Pete, are you sure? I think it looks painted. Here is my original 350 which has been lightly blasted to the bare magnesium/aluminum.

Is there something different about the flexplate cover, I am being dense today and cant figure it out

Jud - I will look again or can call BTO to ask. Myself and the shop foreman both felt it was bare metal. For the dust cover I just wanted to point out that it is provided and is the correct aluminum cover for a 4wd application. I'll keep you updated as to the linkage arrangement we end up with.

The hugger orange single stage Imron is on!!! Looks more red than orange under that light. Will get lots more pics once bed, doors, etc. are done. The dash top was painted a flat black as per OEM. White to follow.....

Thanks guys! Last week the cab was off the frame in a paint booth when the dash top was sprayed and after the undercoating was applied. I'm not sure if the cab was sprayed on the frame or not - I'd guess no but will ask when I grab picks at the end of the week.

Not to highjack, but how do you know what trucks came with a black dash? was it an options thing, or just certain colors? i know mine was never repainted and had a body color dash

From what I know the top of the dash was basically painted to match the dash pad but in flat paint; green pad with green dash as in the case of my K10. The defrost vents were also color coded to the top of the dash. GM painted the dash in (most? all?) orange trucks black and I believe some other interiors received a black dash as well if the dash pad was black. The black glovebox door in this truck is a bit of an odd ball but other similar examples are known and this phenomenon has been discussed here on the board - many orange super trucks got an orange GB door. I like the contrast of a black door.

BTW - I was in Pagosa Springs this weekend: the thermometer on the way up the mountain in the morning read -13!
