D99 paint divider trim

Hey guys,
I want to put the D99 paint divider trim on my truck that is below the rear window. I have seen a few threads on it but cant find how to attach the little studs that hold the clips on to hold the trim.
I have a parts cab with the stud on it for locations but not sure what to use or how to attached them to the my cab that did have them from the factory.

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Scott

Re: D99 paint divider trim

Two options:

1. weld on studs using a body stud welder with a special attachment
2. screw on studs

Thank you for the options. Do you know where I could order the weld on studs?
Or even the screw in studs? Could you even pop rivet them on?

Re: D99 paint divider trim

Most body shops have the stud welder and could do it for you. If you mark out where the studs go it would be a quick job and probably not cost much.
There are the screw in type, but that's a lot of holes to worry about rusting.

Re: D99 paint divider trim

If the truck is already painted use the screw in type or pop rivits if it hasn't already been painted you could use the weld on studs .It's not cheap to have them installed .

Re: D99 paint divider trim

I am not familiar with the trim clips. Are they this type of stud?

If so they were used on a lot of GM trim especially front and rear glass trim.

Classic Industries sells them. I assume other suppliers do as well. Maybe even your local Chevy dealer.

Here's the Classic Industries link.

Re: D99 paint divider trim

Any Autobody supplier will have them. a Unispotter stud gun comes with the studs and the tip to put them on. These are a common thing. And they will never leak.

Re: D99 paint divider trim

Wow. Ok guys Thank you for all the suggestions
I think I would go with the river idea instead of screws. But want to weld them if possible. I will stop by my local body shop as see if I can buy a dozen or so.

Thanks again. I will post a picture of what I do. Before and after!

Re: D99 paint divider trim

H&S or unispotter # 1003 is what looks like I need. But I don’t need 500 of them. And the adapter is about $30 Anyone have the adapter I can borrow and a dozen or so of these rivets?

Re: D99 paint divider trim

To use a stud gun you need an 1 1/4" of bare metal around each stud you intend to apply ,They have to be perfectly straight and then you have to deal with doing body work around each stud which is a PITA , if you don't get good adhesion when spotting them on they can come off usually when your finished with paint and installing the trim. It's much easier to align your trim /drill your holes and then finish all your paint work , Slide the plastic molding clip onto the rivit stud and THEN rivit them to your truck . if you worried about rust use some flow grade sealant on each one prior to installing .

The problem with the screw in studs is they are a #1 phillips head screw diver and if your driver doesn't fit really good to the screw they can easily slip leading to paint gouges and scratching

This is why the rivits are easiest /faster and less expensive .I have 2- 67 cabs I'll be fitting trim to this next week if you need pictures ,

Re: D99 paint divider trim

GOM. Everything I have read is pretty much Word for Word what you have wrote on this post regarding these types of trim secure points . I agree with you about the rivets but I want to weigh all the options. I don’t like the screws and if I can weld them on with certainty that they will remain that’s the best option. But definitely faster with the rivets. I think I am going to order the rivets and test it out on some sheet metal. Thank you

Also I am down with pictures of you for kind. I will post a link to the weld on drugs and the adapter just in case someone at a later date reads this.

Thank you guys!

Re: D99 paint divider trim

Hey guys.
I got the trim out and got it marked up on the cab. I was able to get the info off the parts truck.
The ziplock bag was $32 for 20 rivets. Crazy right?
The rest are pictures of the studs riveted on. It was easy after the locations were found.
I did add a little seam sealer to the rivet before I crimped them in.

Re: D99 paint divider trim

it looks like you got it ! You may want to cover the studs before paint so the clips which fit tightly will slide on easier ,Leave the tubing about 1/16 off the body of the truck so it just covers the stud but allows paint at the base .

Thanks for posting about the rivets, I had seen the screws before but wasn’t crazy about them. All the studs were cut off my cab by a previous owner. I’m subscribing to this thread so I’ll be ready when I put my trim back on.

Subscribing also....I like those pop-rivet studs better than the screws.

I'd like to add this trim to my cab also. It looks like it centers on the bottom edge of the drip rail??

I actually placed mine so the bottom of the chrome trim will stop right at the bottom of the drip rail. I am about ready to put the trim on after paint, So thank you for reminding me about this thread!
