Re: Unique trucks...

That is probably a yard goat but how'd you like to be driving along and have those air horns blast beside you and you look down to see this thing oozing by?

It's a Ferrari eater . What it is, a special built large long load tractor that is designed to allow the load to project out over the tractor. Or, one is used in the rear and one in front. The ones made for the rear can have no running gear, just steering and brakes

Dirty low down no good truckers...

I imagine that there is some sort of "pony motor" just to run power steering and air compressor ???

I don't see an air line running all the way back on those loads.

Re: Unique trucks...

I bet you're right, pony motor. I was thinking all hydraulic or air but with each load some other odd size independent power source makes sense. I had just noticed that these others I showed aren't self-propelled. That first one I have seen used as a semi tractor up front, with a long low load out over it. With the others was a caption on one that called them steer cars.

Re: Unique trucks...

The technical name for it is "steer car". According to this article, it has no brakes or turn signals of its own:

Not even any brakes, huh. Then steer cars are just like the downhill go carts we use to make. Just steering, no brakes, just GO till you run out of hill!!!

I had to look twice at that picture. My first thought was, "Is there supposed to be something on that trailer?"

Yeah, I used to run in the soap box races when I was a kid. We did some crazy fun stuff before video screens took over everything.

That is a unique vehicle Tim. I have been trying to find pics of that truck again. As I recall it was built here in northern Arkansas. I have lost pics and info on it. Do you have more on it?

Re: Unique trucks...

At a local bike show in the '90s an all out custom bike showed up on a Chevy like that. I don't recall it being an actual trailer. The one I saw was single tire/single axle and just made to haul a couple Harleys. He had that deck laid right on the ground for the bike to roll straight off and on.

I'm not sure if "unique" is the right word for the thread title. Most of these, it's more like "laughing stock" rofl!

Even the ones that are done correctly have me laughing pretty good

I thought that was the one you are talking about. That thing is way too cool. Custom with an actual function

I see goofy to impressive in this collection. Many are well engineered. Here is another "front wheel drive" hauler. How many here can haul a ditch witch without a trailer?

Re: Unique trucks...

Can't remember the name of the designer, but there was an early front wheel drive motorhome that used a 4wd truck drive train without the rear shaft/axle. They made the floor low so it had standing headroom.

I think maybe it was the same guy that later designed the Studebaker wagon, Wagoneer, and Jeep XJ ???

Brooks Stevens was the designer.

I also found these. NASA used them to transport astronauts to the launch pad, and apparently some of them are still around:

Wasn't a Cortez Motorhome what Charles Kuralt used for his "On The Road" CBS News segments ????

Or does no one else even remember that

I'm not sure if he ever used a Cortez - the Ford museum has a Ford motorhome he used - but I definitely remember Charles Kuralt.

Watching this video tribute made me smile:

Maybe he wore out the Cortez and replaced it, because that's definitely what I remember.

Notice the B&W still at 2:18 is NOT the same motorhome that they are sitting in at the museum. The dash is different!

Re: Unique trucks...

It could be a Quicksilver Messenger Service sticker in that era

I think that was an actual model of Kamp King made for vans. With a few alterations required.

Thgose GMC FWD RVs used Toronado drivetrain

Who said these trucks are funny anyway? This is some serious uniqueness that can make you laugh, that's all! wait! I think I meant to post this in WTH. Oh well, I'll do both. It's a WTH unique something or other
