Striped thread on crank
So I have a striped thread on the back of my crank where the flywheel mounts up and I'm wondering if I can drill and tap it larger. I'm aware of balancing issues, so should I drill all six holes larger and tap them all so the bolts are the same size and balanced?

Yes, and to be safe, yes.

Re: Striped thread on crank
I'll give it a shot. I'm glad I don't have to put a new crank in it. I have to pull the engine and trans back out anyway so I'll take care of it then.
Thanks

Re: Striped thread on crank
I'd say they're so close to the crank center line that it wouldn't matter that much if you just put a heli-coil in it. If you're really worried, then just do the one opposite the stripped one and it will still be balanced. I wouldn't do all 6.

Re: Striped thread on crank
X 2 on the heli-coil maybe loctite it to the crank
Also consider that the amount of material your adding equals the amount of material removed so the difference in weight is really just the difference of crank material (cast or steel) vs the heli-coil or bolt. If that makes sense.

Re: Striped thread on crank
Not enough off-center mass to worry about the out-of-balance issue.
* unless of course you're red-lining at 8,000 rpm between every shift. Mac.

Re: Striped thread on crank
I wish I could spin it at 8000. Probably more like 5500. I'm still going to drill and tap all of them to make sure. I have a scatter shield but I don't want anything coming apart in there.

Re: Striped thread on crank
Wow. I had never heard of helicoil. I just read up on it. Looks like it will work for about ten bucks. I might just drill and tap the stripped hole and do the same to the opposing bolt hole on the other side to make sure. This fix would be free.
