Crank pulley

Hello Crew.

Worked on many engines but relatively new to SBC.
Stripping down a 1965 SBC, the crank pulley is kind of odd.
It is just 2 plates riveted together with shoulder rivets about 1/2" apart.
There is no rubber element to it, it seems to have very little mass.
Also it is press fit and the crank is not tapped.
It does look like there is something in the hole in the crank, almost like a bushing.

I assume bear puller to remove it and BFH to put it back on.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks
Nitro

Re: Crank pulley

The pulley is bolted to the damper. Remove the three bolts & you can see the rubber between the outer ring. You remove it with apuller that uses The bolt holes. Do not pull from the outer edge of the damper. You will destroy it. It is hammered back on. Some guys drill & tap the end of the crank so it can be pulled on. Then a thick flat washer & bolt can be installed to make sure it doesn't come off.

Re: Crank pulley

The '67 and earlier small block balancers need to be warmed up prior to installing them onto the crank to expand the bore slightly. That is unless you have the crank snout drilled and tapped, in which case you can use a balancer installation tool.

Re: Crank pulley

I have solved the mystery the outer ring and rubber is missing.
It is no longer a damper.

Re: Crank pulley

Clean it up & take a hard look at it. Those are weird dampers. They are not very big. It may be OK.

Re: Crank pulley

If this is a 283, they never had much of a 'harmonic dampener' from the factory. Certainly nothing like you see on a 350.

Re: Crank pulley

Some of the old V8s 283 and back didn't have a damper. The just had a solid metal piece pressed on so you had something to attach your pulley to.

What he said....the early 283, had a steel hub (no rubber). it was nuetral balance, so you could put any balancer on that mas also nuetral....with the proper chain cover/timing pointer. I would drill/tap the end of the crank for a bolt, on the bigger balancers. I built a 62, 283, & have a 64....with a steel crankshaft, the both ran a steel hub.....longhorn
