Project "Captain Insano"

I was telling my wife that i needed to think up a project name for my '69 build. The first thing she said was "project captain insano". Of course i believe we can all agree that building a truck from the frame up is perfectly sane. I like her to get as much involved as she can though.

Plans-
'69 c10 swb
'68 front clip DONE
Fleetside
Vintage A/C
Ride Tech Strong Arms DONE
Accuair/Slam Specialties RE7 (not slammed, as of now) DONE
Staggered 20's
Wood Bed
Boyd Welding Alum. gas tank DONE
undecided on color
I'm just looking to build a smooth flowing looking truck.

383/700r4 ALMOST DONE
heads/cam, LT's, stall, etc.
looking to get atleast 350 rwhp NA

If anyone has an opinion on a way to go about something that i'm doing or just other ideas, feel free to let me know. I've learned alot of new things and tricks from checking out all the other builds on this site. I'm always excited to learn more ideas.

Here's some photos to get this started, i've included a few of my wife and i to share with who we are. It's just my wife, I, and our 3 dogs.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

sorry, i already sold the step side bed to a board member back in oct. it was tough, that bed was in excellent shape and my wife wanted me to keep it, but i had to go fleet.
got the glass and cab pulled today. it's going to be a tight fit working, but i'll manage. all the panels etc. will be going in the back yard and everything else in the attic to make room.
i'll be replacing the usual cab supports and floor sections.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

i got this truck about 6 months ago and i finally got to do some cutting. after i got a section of the first cab support cut, i now see the aftermarket pieces are about half as thick. so, i'll be cutting off as little as possible off the original.
also got my AAW harness in today. it's always a great day when you see parts sitting at your door.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

thanks for the support, guys.
got my KBS all-in-one chassis kit in today.

smokinstang70 - i will be selling the wheels. i'm estimating this build will take me atleast 1 1/2 yrs and the wheels are the last thing on my list. so you're kind of catching me off guard a bit. give me your email address and i'll send you some pics & we can talk about it.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

well, this weekend hasn't gone as smoothly as i would like. but we can't have it all though.
the grains in the sand for my blaster are too large. i put a larger tip on and it didn't come out with enough force to cut the rust, so i now need to find a finer medium for blasting. so, with me working 50 hrs at work and even working this saturday & sunday, i was still determined to get some progress made. i decided for now to grind around the edges so i could get some welding done. now i need to get some gas for my welder. i'm just burning holes and globbing welds. it holds, but i'm definetely not proud. i also now have some cab corners on the way.
for now, i'm going to move to the other side and get the rust cut out and the panels shaped for fitment.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Wow that cab is pretty rough, you have your work cut out for you. Sorry that was a lame attempt at a pun
Your original post said you wanted a "smooth flowing truck". A supercharger will make it a bit twitchy, forced induction really peps up the motor.

my mistake, i should've put that after my plans for the body. i meant i'm wanting a smooth flowing truck (body wise). something that's just low and clean. not too much sensory overload. however, i really do like the 67 body trim on a bagged truck. i've been debating that idea also. for now, i'm just going with the center trim on the grille and the "chevrolet" lettering on the front of the hood.
i suppose i should edit that first post.

your right, my cab and bed need ALOT of TLC. i'll be slicing and dicing the bed up. stay tuned for pics of the bed when i get to that point. lol i'm loving every minute though. if i'm not playing with my truck, then i would just be inside watching tv.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

i'm starting to get back on track now. the cab corners came in and i'm actually very impressed with them. they line up perfectly and i only see one spot i'll need to tweek.
work let me take one of there extra bottles of C25 home for my build. welding is excellent now. i want to show a few pics of the welds incase there's someone thinking about getting a small electric welder. i want to show the difference between straight electric welding and one with gas. make sure you get one with the gas option.

my welder - chicago electric mig 151
i paid $200 ($100 discount from sale) at harbor freight
the first weld is straight electric w/flux core wire
the second is with c25 w/solid wire

i'll let the photos speak for themselves.

now i just need to do something about my blaster.

Looks like you were pretty close on your guess.

Daniel, it is really looking great. I don't post much on the board since mine is pretty much done but I do still lurk and I have been keeping up with this build and I must say you have really brought this truck back from the dead.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Looks like you were using the wrong polarity with the core wire. Generally flux core wire is straight polarity and solid wire is reversed.
