Bought an old CJ5

As if I didn't have enough vehicles already. The sickness got me.

I have never owned a Jeep before. And know nothing about them.

But I couldn't pass it up.

Anybody else have one?

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I was into Jeep cj’s well before these trucks. I’ve owned about a dozen of them, mostly cj 5’s, and a really nice 86 cj 7. From the pics yours looks to be about an 80? Best year imo, Dana 300 short shaft transfer case, t176 4 speed trans.

Yup. It's a 1980 with the 4 speed.

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I had a CJ5 for about two years and used it to push Snow. I loved it for that but she was a rough riding little Girl. I traded it for a 80 Levi CJ7 I wish I still had it.

Oh yeah it rides a little rough. But I kind of like that.

Cool Jeep. I've never owned one, but been around many in my life. Always wanted one but always needed something else. I had a guy work for me late '80s-early '90s who always had black vehicles. Last vehicle I saw him own was a CJ5 all black incl. wheels. No chrome nothin' nowhere

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I had a little interest in owning a jeep in the 70s when they had the V8 and auto cj. Was it the Eagle edition or something like that? I needed a pkup more so i never got serious about a jeep.

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I always liked jeeps growing up for some reason...

Like others above, I've really always wanted one, but it would really serve no purpose for me other than being super cool (even a brand new one for a DD, I need my silverado more), and I have too many other toys I don't want to give up for one.

304 powered Renegades were all over. Then came all the special editions later. I was the same way. I liked them but needed a truck and if I got something that couldn't haul I wanted better gas mileage. I felt the same about Blazers and Jimmys, but did end up going with them. I would like a smaller vehicle again, though.

This should be a fun toy for you, Paul. Keep you feeling young in your retirement

Re: Bought an old CJ5

That one looks like new!! Great find!!

I had a 75 CJ5 back in 1986 or so. It was a rusted out piece then, but one of my favorite vehicles of all time. I would love to have another some day.

You will have a lot of fun with that one.

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I have an ‘86 CJ7 from Missouri I picked up about 5 years ago. It was all stock with some rust under the roll bar mounts so I decided to redo it. Ran poorly also so I followed some online instructions on how to work out all of electronic related bugs and ended up with a massive pile of unneeded under hood wiring. That, and a new carb and it runs great now. It has a 5 speed unfortunately. It’s fun around town and in the dunes but I couldn’t imagine using one as a daily driver.

Is that a Bronco back there?

Daisy Duke...I wish I could have got that option.

And yes most of my cars are black. I guess I'm just dumb enough to live in the desert and buy black vehicles with leather seats (ouch).

Re: Bought an old CJ5

A Jeep is a vehicle I've always wanted but never owned. I tried to buy one back when I was in college for a winter vehicle but didn't find a decent in my budget.

I'm finding myself looking at them again recently. Considered getting rid of my side-by-side for one since it primarily sits in the garage and a Jeep is street legal. I've found one I really want but the sale of the sxs won't cover it and pretty sure she's not going to be on board with boot on another toy right now.

Was also into CJs long before these trucks. They are great if you like riding in a giant roller skate.

Re: Bought an old CJ5

I got my 1st Jeep when I was 14, the man gave it to me, an M38.
I couldn't stop thanking him & he finally said "Don't thank me yet boy, you don't know nothin about jeeps. They have two main faults. They will run fine until you turn the steering wheel & start home, then that ^!%#$@ is either gonna quit runnin or somethin REAL IMPORTANT is gonna FALL OFFA it!"
What does he know, he's just an old man, right?
We were pulling it with a '69 Datsun pickup & just about dark the right rear axle assy run out & took a whole row of mailboxes down in Vancleave Mississippi!
The other thing I leaned about Jeeps is you don't get in them & Drive them, you put a Jeep on & Wear it!
Oh yeah, I'm down to one Jeep now, an M38A1
