Locking the hood

I would like to be able to lock my hood. I would prefer something like in a more modern truck, with a cable I pull under the dash before I can open hood.

Open to all ideas. What have some of you done or seen?

Re: Locking the hood

ok, what I did on my '49 - on the original latch I cut off the tab that you grab to pull the release. then I got a cable out of a c10 & ran it from the left side of the dash along the inner fender & to the latch. I drilled a hole out towards the end of the latch. put a bolt in the hole with a hole drilled thru it for the release wire to go thru. That really didn't work too good so I pit a loop in the wire and the bolt thru the loop & hole. seems to work good.
I pull the handle inside and that releases the latch. then I still have to pull the latch under the nose of the hood to open the hood.
sorry - I cnat post pictures. good luck.

Re: Locking the hood

Do you have any pics? I still have the hood release from my c10 donor.

Re: Locking the hood

No problem. Let me see if I understand correctly.

Here's a picture of a latch assembly upside down. The pull tab part is at the end of the arm, is this what you cut off so there's nothing to grab?

Then you drilled a hole in the arm closer to the latch... and using a bolt and cable you can pull arm that way?

Cable is mounted forward of latch so it pulls it forward?

Re: Locking the hood

Yep that is how he did it. I'd think you want the hole out far enough to get good leverage but not so far out that the cable pulls out too far due to the distance the lever moves. Plus not so far out someone can easily reach the lever.

I've never had a problem at shows with car guys opening my hood but have had issues a couple of times with the 80 somethings that think they can open a closed hood on a truck or car that doesn't belong to them at a show. Caught one and his same age buddy standing in front of my truck at an event once and when I asked why he thought he could open the hood without permission he fussed at me because I had a V8 in it and it wasn't "original" .
