Re: Spitfire

Another shot of the old girl, I drove it around my buddies "racetrack" for about 20 minutes until she started missfiring and running like TRASH, spitting, sputtering, dying under load, but would stay running if i kept giving it gas. so i try playing with ther carb settings, and nothing changes. turn the idle up, and nothing. so just because why not i start tapping the header tubes to feel how hot they are, and one is WAY cooler, so i pull that plug wire off, and through examining it, there is a slight burn mark on it, just enough where it was sparking off onto the header causing a dead cylinder, but by this time the parts store was closed. But, i feel way better knowing this is why it ran like crap, and for the first 20 minutes the smoke started getting less and less, as i was driving it around 20-30 mph and varrying the throttle, i think the rings needed to seat themselves again.

We started sanding and painting with some rattle cans, as i just want the truck to be one color for now, the frame off resto will be at a later date when i have the funds. I also got the led rings wired up using a toggle switch from inside the cab. Also, ran the wires for the tailights, so after school i can get them working, and finish more sanding, paint, and general work to the truck. My boss at my new job (he was my football coach up until i got injured and quit) even decided to pitch in some money!!!! Also, the buddy whose shop we are using now wants a k10, so I'm sure thatl be the next project.

Keep plugging away at things. But make sure all the wiring you do is up to snuff. You don't want any fires..

Re: Spitfire

safety first
good brakes
good tires
no fuel leaks
fire ex in reach of driver, saved my butt a couple times
seat belts with solid rust free mounts
steering system in good condition
you have a good start on a nice truck. you don't want to get hurt and would never forgive your self if you hurt someone by not making sure your truck is safe to be on the road.

Re: Spitfire

Alright, so I was not gunna do the build at my house, I simply dont have the shop. This resulted in me loading her up on the trailer and making the 10 minute trek into town.

The drive went safe, and scarlett pulled amazing!

We made quick work of staring the tear down.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, I'm just tellin you what you need to do and get...Get a timing light! I would make the HEI distributor swap as well. Did you get the rear brake issue fixed? Really need to know what your timing is set at! I'm curious what carb is on the old girl? That motor appears to have been rebuilt, are those flat top pistons? What heads (casting numbers) (6 or 7 digit number)? Also, you need to run an old school motor oil in these flat tappet motors, an oil with "ZDDP" in it Like Valvoline VR1 or Mag-1 motor oil so the cam and lifters live. I'm thinking you've had timing issues causing the backfires and idle problems? Very cool truck by the way, and a bummer you couldn't melt some rubber doing a world class burnout at graduation...I have two 72's, "Belle & Nasty Sally" named them after old girlfriends because these trucks will take all your money for new shoes, make up, and command all your attention...Welcome to the world of Chevy trucks! Heres a video of Nasty Sally winning a first place trophy at the 2017 Truck Nationals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jXx...B&index=2&t=0s

Looks like you're well on the way to having a good & fun to drive rig .

FWIW, any Diesel (C) rated oil will give you the cam wear protection you need and it's readily available every where and in 10W - whatever you're wanting .

Post Oil Choices

I don't want to create another dreade oil thread so I won't mention brand names, they're not all that important anyway once you go to a good quality DIESEL RATED multi viscosity oil .

You're wise to want to run thinner oil, it gets up out of the pan and doing it's job faster and that's important .

Since you understand the needs of anti scuff protection, consider $pending the few more dollars for fully synthetic oil ~ any modern synthetic oils is orders of magnitude better than what the engine was designed to run on and are also incredibly detergent to boot .

I use only fully synthetic oils in all my various engines and have some 50 year old engines still running fine never had the heads off.....

I'm interested in what cylinder heads you're planning to use ~ Chevy made a bewildering array of different SBC 350 heads over the decades, I'm partial to working engines so I like big valves and low(ish) compression ratios so you can run them very hard and not worry about over heating / short engine life .

Good F.I. 350 heads are cheap and litter every self service junkyard in America .

I'm also fond of factory grin 3/4 or 1 ton cams, they give stellar performance and retain a smooth idle and decent fuel economy ~ too many times guys build a romping stomping Hot Rod them don't like or can't afford driving it much....

"Festina Lente" as the Italians say .

Sadly, life happened and I sold the truck, but, i tracked it down. hoping to trade my 86 K20 for it. bought a house, getting married, and decided to track it down. I can thank my wife to be for finding it, as the current owner tried messaging me on facebook and I didnt see it.

It actually has the correct bed now, my dads 58 chevy made use of the old stepside however. nothing went to waste here from our convo tonight he sounds like he will jump on it. he said he got new wiring harnesses and such. i belive this will be my next frame off build, after my 1994 k1500 resto is complete.
