What am I (transmission)

Looking for help identifying what this transmission is. Owner says he thinks it was from a 86 Blazer. Has MD8 in casting and a large "1" in the casting on pass side. I am unable to see the drivers side as it is still frozen in the ice !

Re: What am I (transmission)

most likely the parts are rusty....worst thing a trans could have in it is water....plus being outside being treated by mother nature in the wrong way. all my cores are inside...only asking for trouble with one left out...good luck !!!

Re: What am I (transmission)

Just to add....on side just above the pan will ID this trans...clean it off and provide the numbers...we will decode it for you. 2 wheel drive pre-Aux valve body type....?

Re: What am I (transmission)

Thanks for the advice ! I looked for numbers but was unable to see anything. It is raining for the next week so I will return to it after it dries up a bit. I didnt see a large "K" which I understand will indicate a more sought after model. I am toying with the idea of having a 700 r built for cruising (my turbo 350 and 3:73 gearing are getting to me at highway speeds.) It is a frame off resto 4x4 (np 205). I will remove the 4x4 stuff and replace with a 700R. In retrospect I should have converted the 4x4 equipment when the
body was off but wanted to retain all original equipment. This way if we want to convert back to original it wont be to big a deal.It has a $5,000 paint / body job so I dont see us going off road anytime soon !

Re: What am I (transmission)

Nice Rig!
I personally don't like the 700R4, but I'm sure some folks have had good luck with them.

It sounds like your goal is to decrease engine rev on the highway?
If so there are some options.
1. Get a gear vendors overdrive unit for what transmission you have now.
These are not cheap, but they sorta turn your 3 speed into a 6 speed.
You could easily have $3500 into it once installed.
This always make that extra gas easy to buy!

2. 4L80e with 205NP kit
I know the rebuild KIT with converter(stock) will be around $1,000
plus core, plus $300 for 205 adapter, etc. etc.
Oh plus controller is 500-1000
I think this is the best band for the buck though, you get a great "stock" transmission and you keep your 4wd.

3. Love it how it is. These trucks rev higher and use gas on the highway, but they were always like that. It may cost more to operate, but how long would it take to recover the cost of your $3-5000 transmission?

Also, keep the 4x4! It's awsome!

Re: What am I (transmission)

I have a 700R4 in my Suburban. I love it. It drives like a more modern truck.

As for the year, scrape off that right rear corner pad. It's in the left side of the picture. It should start with a number then three letters.

If the converter is installed there's a pretty good chance it's not rusty inside.

Also, the "K" case is nothing to write home about.

edit....I should add, if there is water in it and it froze.......that's not good.
