Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

These clips look a lot like the clips that are being repopped to install the trim below the rear window on two paint trucks. Whether or not they would wood, I don't know.

This looks like the part number we need to order for the molded carpet... Would you agree IronCanine?

That's it! And cheaper than the incorrect version! Pretty cool.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

Jumping in since I plan to order... and thanks to the board members for making this happen

Have others seen the price variations on the carpet?

I took a screen grab from one vendor and directly from ACC, ...$85 vs $157 (and did confirm the vendor is selling ACC)

Molded tank cover: $85 vs $157 and carpet (w/Mass backing) : $187 vs. $358

I am great full for all the work that went into getting this done. Is there any word from ACC on doing a 67-68 version too?

I agree that I'd bring it up with ACC. They have been very nice and accommodating with me. The first one they made...the mass backing was crooked and it had creases (It's all in how they handle it when pressed). The second one (which we installed) was pretty perfect. Two things (if you don't want the hassle of sending it back): 1) You may be able to steam it out. 2) Where it's located, once you trim it, fold down the top and work it in...it may be imperceptible.

I think if you want a factory appearing two piece it will probably need to be a member driven affair. I don't think there's market pressure for ACC to do it. We tried to make this one a no-brainer for them. The passenger side cove piece wouldn't be correct if made from our mold....it'd be too short. So you'd have to make a new mold of a non vent tube truck. I don't know what backing they'd use on that piece.

It may be possible to make this carpet appear factory correct for buddy bucket trucks. There may be enough "tail" on the bottom of our carpet that you could carefully cut out the cove and slide it up. I'd have to think about how you'd adhere backing to it secondarily.

I would definitely call them then. I don't know about Dirt's72, but the two they sent me had the mass backing--as it should. See this pic of the carpet we put in our truck (the second carpet they made).

EDIT: You can also see the level of creasing we had above the "cove".

They said they do not offer this product with mass backing. The are replacing the carpet for me. Very good custom service.

PM sent. They should put the backing on there. I think it's important to keep the carpet smooth over the tank...especially over time. If they don't want to put it on there, I'd definitely add some...or a reasonable facsimile of it.

I am not near my truck and, therefore unable to verify this, but I'm 95% sure that the original tank carpet in my '69 does not have mass backing. It's just like the original floor carpet which also did not have mass backing.

Thanks Jim. Yours was a December truck IIRC. Don't know what month Dirt's72's was...but I would not be surprised if it didn't have backing early, but did later. If you think about it...your truck was one of the first sport bucket trucks. As you well know in 69 there were a lot of things in transition even through the model year. Dirt's72's carpet definitely appeared to be original. I have no doubt this is the type of part that could be different or varied over time. Here is a pic from earlier in the thread of davepl's truck that has the backing. What bothered me was that we went to a lot of trouble to get the backing sized and placed correctly with ACC and then when it comes to market, that part gets omitted.

Dirt's72 and I get nothing out of this other than a quality part for our trucks and the satisfaction of something contributed to the community. Considering the effort spent in that process, I would be more than a little disappointed if ACC did not correct this oversight...which I still think they will. ACC really was great to work with on this project.

I have never owned a bucket seat truck, but have multiple sets of everything required except the carpet. This thread has been very informative, for when the time comes.

I have been incorrectly using the term "mass backing" when what I should have said was "jute padding". I apologize for any confusion I have sowed as a result. The jute was what I thought Tuff Gong was indicating was omitted-and we did in fact fuss over that part. That is what I was referencing in the pics I posted. So Jim is 100% right and ACC is 100% right. There is no mass backing on these and never was. There was however a section of jute padding sized to fit over the tank. I'm a numbskull. ACC was and remains awesome on this. Sorry.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

Does anyone know where I can buy an original style gas tank carpet for 71 with buckets? I don't want the one that most are selling that mounts on top of the gas tank. I wish these company's that reproduce parts would make them like the originals. It seems they just don't take the time to go the extra mile and make it right. Some don't care but I'm picky when it comes to details.
Thanks

nwchevy...if you would, take time to read through this thread in which you've posted. It details our effort to reproduce factory correct gas tank carpet...which we did...and is available directly from the manufacturer(ACC) or a multitude of vendors...which are also spotlighted in this thread. We (ACC and participating members -highlighted in this very thread-) took a lot of time and went the extra mile to make it right.

Would love to see pics of your truck.

Re: Bucket Seat Gas Tank Carpet

Hi IronCanine,
Thanks for you response and I did see the reference to ACC after I posted this question. I have reached out to them to confirm what they have, is what I'm looking for. I have an original 71 Cheyenne SWB with about 70% original paint. I've owned it for about 18 years now. It is a factory tilt, posi, rear slider and overload spring truck. The original owner bought it to pull a small camp trailer and had a canopy on it. He must have ordered this truck that way. I have since pulled the overloads loads out, lowered it a bit, put and OD trans in it and added a tach dash. I'm now in the process of added buckets. Fun truck to drive and is one of my favorite of many 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks I've owed since the late 70's.

Beautiful truck. Thanks for sharing. Glad ACC took care of you. The carpet will require a little fitment, but we've got step by step install pictures posted on here to get you where you want to go. Best of luck.
