Tilt steering columns

I was wondering what used tilt steering columns would plug and play on a '71 3/4 chevy if you can't find an Original?

Re: Tilt steering columns

72-80 van will bolt right up. You just need to collapse your intermediate steering shaft. Relocating the neutral safety switch is simple and straightforward. You will need a horseshoe adapter for the turn signal switch to plug in. If you can find a motor home column up through 82 your steering shaft won’t need to be collapsed. These columns do not have a key, same as trucks.

Those things are real expensive, but they are what I'd try to go with as well. Unless its some kind of huge pain. If the van ones bolt right up, that may be a better idea. But I'd do what I could to rebuild the van one while it was out. Address any slop anywhere.

Re: Tilt steering columns

Yes mine was pricey but it was bolt right in, all new, connectors plugged right in.

I paid more so I didn't have and or less headaches

Re: Tilt steering columns

My thoughts about the steering column when mine needed to be replaced was that I could fine one that fit out of another truck, van, car but those would be like 30 to 40 years old and in just as bad a shape as mine.

Then once you get it home and realize it needs to be repaired your at the cost of a brand new one that drops right in!

Yeah I've run into that plenty of times. You'll get a lot of people saying to rebuild this or that, and that its a waste to buy new. Until you factor in all the time and trouble, and the cost of the parts required to rebuild it. Maybe in the end you paid more for that new part, but boy did you save yourself a lot of hassle.

Re: Tilt steering columns

Which brand of new ones? Seems there have been a lot of complaints about the new ones.

Re: Tilt steering columns

If you are buying aftermarket go with flaming river or ididit. They are very pricey, but the $300 new ones made overseas have a LOT of complaints. This is why I recommend a van column for people on a budget. Way less expensive and still oem GM quality.

Re: Tilt steering columns

I converted my 69 C10 from 3OTT to an automatic using a column from a 78 G20 van. As others have stated this was a cheap alternative compared to a new aftermarket piece and it only required minor modifications to bolt in. I found the horse shoe wiring adapter on Rock Auto. Generally the only items that are replaced during a rebuild are the turn signal switch and the upper and lower bearings. All of these items are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace.

Re: Tilt steering columns

I've used Duplicolor low gloss black in the past on other vehicles. It seems to have the correct OEM sheen.

Re: Tilt steering columns

Is the motor home tilt angle different than a pickup?

The one in my truck seems only to go down and no up at all.

I thought the vans went with a column ignition in 78?
