Re: For the MII guys

To all the guys with power steering, does the shaft bind next to the crossmember?

Re: For the MII guys

the input shaft?

I had to notch my frame for it. But my steering is all sorts of messed up. I have 4 universal joints to fit my engine and headers.

Re: For the MII guys

Yes, the input shaft seems to be a little to long on the power steering version. Ive been looking at other project builds trying to see if anyone else with power is that close to the crossmember. Ive tryed ever version of rack & pinion for the mustang and only the manual seems to clear completely .

Re: For the MII guys

your crossmember seems real narrow by the rack, I think its just your corssmember design getting your probs.

Re: For the MII guys

Thanks Cajun, I called heidts and the tech said that it is common for people to notch the crossmember to clear the rack for these trucks. Ive never heard of any of the other guys on here notching the member for the rack. I keep hearing about flaw designs of these mustang ll, is this another flaw. If you notched yours can I see pics please?

Thanks

Re: For the MII guys

Does the x-member fit the inside of your frame without any spacers?

Re: For the MII guys

I can't give you any info about Heidt's design since we build and use our own. In most cases, a u-joint is used off of the rack & pinion. The Borgeson joints are 1.25" at the thickest part. The other u-joint/steering companies that I know of are Maval/Unisteer and Flaming River. I don't have any info on how thick their's are

Re: For the MII guys

Yes solidaxle, It fits pretty snug on the inside rails. it seems like the body of the input shaft should be either shorter or smaller in diameter.

Thumbs up Re: For the MII guys

I have been told the IFS in my '48 is from Fatman, I installed a universal front swaybar from Yogi's as seen in the following link and it cost me $130.

http://www.yogisinc.com/Detail.cfm/-...19/product.htm

Yogi's has excellent customer support as well.....I'm up here in Canada so it's a huge hastle to return stuff to the States. I could only described my IFS because I was not aware at the time that it's made by Fatman. My IFS has similar supports aft of the lower crossmember but unlike the original, mine have supports mounted with bushings instead of the Ford rubber mounts as seen in your pictures.

It installed with very little trouble except for the gussets on the front frame crossmember that had to be heated and hammered up out of the way (only 1/2" up) of my mounts. It works great and the truck handles the corners easily. If you want pictures just let me know...

ive got a mustang 2 also ,all i did was cut offset holes where the rack mounts to the crossmember ,and that moved the rack over enough to the passenger side and gave plenty of clearence.

Re: For the MII guys

Slim,

Are you sure you have the correct rack for that crossmember? It seems a bit wide to give that little bit of clearance. Mine has about 2" clearance to the crossmember ......but it's not a Heidt's product. Send them a few pictures from a wide shot to close-ups so they can see exactly what the problem is and how thier products work together.

Re: For the MII guys

Thanks Atomsplitter, I think I can use a rack for a 82-88 Thundbird. It seems to have a smaller body that covers the shaft. Hey ratrodmiller, do you have any pics of the offset bolts that you descibed?

Re: For the MII guys

what im trying to say is i slotted the mounting holes in the brackets on the crossmember that hold the power rack on.I slotted them to the passenger side and gained clearance.doing so gave me half a inch more.
