The had a WHOLE write-up in Four-Wheel& Off-Road mag, probably almost a year ago. They bought an old K20 or K30 that used to be an army truack with a 6.2 in it. The jacked the truck up, put bigger tires on it, and messed with the 6.2. The turbocharged it and might have fooled a little with the injectors, can't remember.

Overall, they said the 6.2 woke up a little, but was still slow. They said it had awsome torque, but it just couldn't keep up in traffic. I'll look to see if I can find the link. They did say the 6.2 was a dog, though.

My $.02 worth

yea, the GM diesels up to the duramaxx, werent exactly top of the line...they do produce decent torque, but they arent as good as cummins/navistar ones IMO

i turbo charged a 1993 1-ton,6.2l,4-speed,3.73's.it did make a great improvement.it would hang allday with a stock 454 and get better milage doing it.yea they were not the most reliable, but were easy to work on.i put 190,000 miles on the truck when the crank shaft broke.i used a gail banks turbo setup,it was well engineered and easy to install.

Very few like the 6.2, in other words, you start with nothing, spend a ton of money and still have nothing.

I am not calling you crazy at all.................I looked a putting a 6.2 in mine, but once I looked hard enough, and going by my experiences driving a 6.5, it wasn't hard to see that just by doing a tad more work fabrication wise, their was a better choice.

The point here is, if you already have the 6.2 in, I don't think I'd waste the money putting a turbo on it, the power and fuel gains would be marginal not to mention you could buy alot of diesel for what a turbo kit costs.

Thats what i meant. Save your money for more diesel, dont waste it on a turbo kit. If you can put one together using junkyard 6.5 pieces, if possible, do that. Banks is way over priced for the little bit of performace you will get.

Okay,

Sorry for my false point of view. Finding a 6.5 is quit hard overhere. A Banks kit was never an option.. (overpriced). But putting something together myself is the way I want to do it. My last brainwave is putting a Eaton or Roots compressor on it... Compressors are not that expensive overhere (lost of mercedesses in the scrapyard) Is saves me an exhaust changement. And easier to re-adjust the boost (different diameters).

Any one here to back me up???

Or is it really waste of time / money???

Re: Turbocharge a 6.2 v8 diesel

Go to www.thedieselpage.com.There is a guy over your way named Peter J.Bierman that has installed twin Volvo(I think) turbos on a 6.2 in a military Blazer. There is acompany in Sweden that sells Supercharged 6.5s.Also,Peninsular Marine in Michigan,USA builds 300hp 6.5s.These companies use the newer upgraded GeneralEngineProduct blocks which were never installed in production GMs.On The Diesel Page there is a moderator that has a very impressive`84 C/10 with "no steenkin`turbo" that puts out about 200 or more bhp.I`m happy with my`burb with a N/A 6.2,no plans to turbo. It runs along just fine.I have a 300+hp Peninsular Marine 6.5 in a`92K/3500.I drop alot of jaws on those Dmax,Pstroke, and Cummins guys. All the companies mentioned have websites.I can`t recall the namr of the one in Sweden. You could ask on The Dierel Page.

Re: Turbocharge a 6.2 v8 diesel

I had a 6.2 in an 85 suburban non-turbo a couple of years ago. On flat land, slight upgrade or freeways, it accelerated as well as any gasoline engine even from a full stop. It also was quieter than most truck deisels. Where it lacked was in steep or long upgrades where it acted like a deisel semi, it would tow anything uphill but it was slow, loaded or empty. There was a magazine write-up on a trucking magazine that showed how to install a banks turbo kit with an exhaust temp guage. They stressed the importance of controlling exhaust temperatures. Guys I talked to that have done this said it took care of the uphill problem. I wish I still had it, but I needed a truck with a bed at the time. I just purchased another burb but with a Goodwrench 454, I honestly don't feel much difference in acceleration of the two. I haven't climbed a hill with it yet though.

Re: Turbocharge a 6.2 v8 diesel

As mentioned, the best place on the 'net for GM diesel info is www.thedieselpage.com We have several members over there from the Netherlands.

I'm very happy with my 6.2L, and after all the work I've done to it, it'll flat out burn the rubber off my rear tires. It tows great, has plenty of power, and gets great fuel mileage. Of course, I've sunk a lot of money into it....but I do love the 6.2L.

If you can scrounge up the parts, you can build your turbo set up for around $500 American. I agree that the Banks turbo package is way overpriced.

I still might not be able to beat a high performance small or big-block gasser in a street race, but I'd give 'em a run for their money, plus I'd be able to tow a large load without the engine wearing out prematurely, and I'll be able to pass twice as many fuel stations doing it!

I will agree that a stock 6.2L or 6.5L is nothing impressive, but they can be tuned. My high-performance 6.2L will spank my newly acquired 6.5L, that's for sure.

Good luck!

Casey
