Re: 72 blazer motor casting number

A few things we will need to address your concern about your engine being the original:

Is the engine a 6 cylinder, V8 ?

V8 Casting number, normally found on the block behind the cylinder head on drivers side

Casting date, this is the date the block was made...it would be something like D 17 2

V8 - on the passenger side....front of engine there is a pad with the VIN stamped along with the actual date the engine was assembled...also, there would be a suffix after the date.

Take some pics, post them and we all can provide our expertise to answer the question.

There's no VIN stamp on GM truck engines of this era...

Re: 72 blazer motor casting number

No i own the blazer it a 350 just took it to the machine shop to be built. I only got the numbers off the front passenger side of motor. Which are V0512TDR. My blazer is a 1972 blazer 4x4. Do I also need to get the numbers off of the rear of the motor?

Re: 72 blazer motor casting number

Casting number and casting date will help like I said in my previous post...you can google the TDR letters and you might get something like 1980 350 c10.......Thanks.

Also, you can look at the VIN tag inside the driver's door....it should indicate which MONTH/YEAR the truck was assembled..... upper right corner of door VIN tag some show something like 2 / 72 (example)......which would be february 1972
Take a look at the rear differential and check the casting date.....with all these "dates" ....see how close they are to each other...

So far I see the engine has a may 12th date....the casting date on the block must be "before" May 12th...
Is the casting number of the engine 3970010 ? I do not see a TDR suffix in 1972....
