How to mount dash speaker - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm looking for knowledge and possibly some pictures of the original mount dash speaker. I'm looking to installing a radio in my 67 project but I don't want a bunch of speakers. If anyone know what is required or possibly has the mounting brackets, etc. Please let me know.

There is a small bracket bolted to the inside of the dash. The speaker slides into this. The speaker just presses against the underside of the dash. There is also a flat piece that connects the radio to the speaker bracket and a bolt or three to hold the whole thing together. I wish I had some installed photos, but it's pretty tight in there and and would be hard to get good shots. If the photo and my description aren't enough, let me know and I'll try and make it clearer.

I made a wood bracket and mounted it to the stock grill via some allthread, washers, and nuts...came out nice and sounds great..

Also, check out Custom Auto Sound. They make a really good replacement speaker that is a "dual voice coil" 4 x 6 that fits right up there and sounds about a thousand times better than the original paper element speaker.

The above site also sells a factory direct dual cone 8-10 ohms speaker. Keep in mind most aftermarket speakers are 4-6 ohms which could possibly damage your radio. Good Luck with your project.

I'll have to get one of those! I have an original in the dash now and it does tend to buzz quite a bit at higher volumes due to it's age.

Borrowed this pic from the other radio thread. This little bracket attaches to the inside of the dash/firewall, but nothing actually goes through the firewall. The long speaker bracket slides into the little one and is held in place with a bolt.

Ok, thanks everyone for your help. I've got the bracket installed but no speaker yet. I ordered it today from the link above. I made some notes in my pictures so hopefully they'll help the next guy trying to do the same install.

You got it! Now all you need is one to go from the radio to the firewall bracket. You can see the one I'm talking about in that borrowed photo from my earlier post. It should run from the back of the radio into the side of the firewall bracket. If you don't have the real thing, metal plumber's tape is always a good substitute.
