Depending on whom you're talking to, the Chev/GMC version DID NOT use the tapered roller type, yet they are listed in the Chev/GMC parts list???
If worse comes to worst, I would have to also get a housing that suits the flat roller race, but believe I can get away with the tapered roller type housing that I have here.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

Dave, GM used 2 different NP435s. Usually the light duty option was the close-ratio model and some C-30s and the C-40-60 got the wide ratio one. But there is a guy on this forum who has the wide ratio on his C20 and says it is stock. I don't know about the bearings but it could be that the wide ratio one has the tappered rollers. Here look at the 1969 Chevrolet Truck Data Book;

Re: NP435 questions

WorkingLonghorn,
I take it that you lifted that from an early Chevvy/GMC book??
Your illustration calls it the NP435CR (for close ratio???)4.56:1 first gear.
My Chevvy/GMC manual calls it the NP435GA.
So, as yet, still a bit up in the air as to just exactly is the correct designation.
Which makes it a bit hard to positively identify it by designation alone, that's why I thought it would help by adding as much info from the parts manual as I could, pertaining to the actual input shaft dimensions.

A bloke sold me an original Australian parts manual for a C30, but it only has the 3 speed column shift, the SM465 4 speed or the auto, none of which is really applicable to what I am after. This bloke also added that prior to 1969, Chevvy trucks were assembled in Australia from imported components, wasn't until the next change of body style(1972???) that GM started stamping their own firewalls etc (for R/H drive) over here also. Which only confuses the issue more. When I asked this bloke if they could be identified by engine, he also said that the C10/20/30 came out in Australia with 283/307 V8's as well as the 350's, but he ran larger C50 and C60 trucks that ONLY came out with the 292 BIG SIX engines, even though some had the 5 speed boxes and some with 2 speed diffs. All of which is not helping me much as seem to be getting further and further away from the NP435's.
It also seems that you cannot line up year to year models between yours and ours, we always seemed to be 12-18 months behind you guys.

Re: NP435 questions

Is that 435 box you have an original out of a Chevrolet or GMC Or are you converting a box from another make to fit your Chevrolet or GMC?

Re: NP435 questions

Dave, yeah that info is from the original "Chevrolet Truck" "Data Book" that was for the dealers. Has nearly every option and spec for these trucks by year.

Somebody this past week posted a GMC original part catalog for sale and it sold apparently. You could look over the posts for the last week and find the guy that bought it and ask him to look up the part number for that shaft and housing, if that would help your search any.

Re: NP435 questions

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
kwmech,
Thanks. Rather than buying another complete box and all the associated drama of getting it sent halfway around the world, that is why I'm trying to get hold of just the correct input shaft (and input shaft housing, if obtainable).

WorkingLonghorn,
I'll see if I can find the relevant posting and shoot off a private email.

Steve,
It's not the ORIGINAL Chev/GMC box, but am trying to get it into a 75 C30 with a SBC350.
Don't know if you blokes are familiar with these NP435's, but I have two boxes here that I have successfully converted. One is a Dodge version with an International Harvester input shaft, behind a Perkins 203 TDI in one project, the other is a Ford NP435 with a Dodge 23 spline fine input shaft.
It is NOT the bellhousing that is the problem, have a late model bell that has the two extra ears machined into the front face, so will accept the SBC350 block.
Good thing about all the variations is that although the input shafts and actual case configurations are slightly different, the actual internals are mostly interchangeable (except for the mainshafts). I have, as I said, picked the eyes out of the ones I have here and made up two complete boxes to suit my applications.
Reason I'm trying to run an NP435 behind the 350, is the close ratio version , for what I want, is a lot better suited than the deep granny gear.
As I have said, I have had about half a dozen of these boxes in differing guises at one stage or another, still got enough parts left over to make one more good one, IF I can get the right input shaft.
If I can simplify it that way, can use just about standard Chev/GMC parts, already been down the track matching clutch, throwout bearings etc on the Perkins project, had to end up getting a special clutch disc made up from scratch.
Thanks again for all your help, Cheers Dave64

kwmech,
Any chance that it is somewhere that you may be able to find any marking numbers on the input shaft bearing housing?
Most of these NP boxes had casting numbers either on the face or around the rim of the four bolts that hold the shaft housing to the actual transmission face.
Sometimes possible to seperate just who the boxes were built for by casting numbers.
Any help appreciated, Dave64

Re: NP435 questions

These guys might have what you need. Also their site shows exactly which year of each model had the taper and which had the ball bearings. Give them a call.

Re: NP435 questions

Thanks,
Sent an email to that site posted, received a message to say they have received it and are looking into it.
Will also chase up that tag number and see what it reveals.
