Last year in a moment of brain ____ I bought an as cast finned aluminum valve cover from 12 Bolt Tom and rather than sending it back in exchange for a polished one I decided that I would wait and try my hand at polishing it.

Well that didn't happen but the short version of the story is that a gent popped up on a group I am in on FB who polishes aluminum parts. I sent him some photos of the cover and asked what he wanted to do it and the price was friendly. shipping ate me up but here are the results that showed up tonight.
First photo is the end result and the other two are the before shots.

That pretty well decks my 292 out with shiny finned aluminum.

Fixed the photos for those who wondered what the bellhousing was.

Looks good.

I remember spending what seemed like forever polishing a GM alternator years ago. Everyone loved it but I learned that I wasn't built to enjoy that kind of work. I also adjusted what i was willing to pay for a good polished or chromed part.

Ive got a pair of old school Corvette covers I want to use on my 327.

valvecover@hotmail.com I think the flathead guys have him pretty busy and it took a month before he had it done but sure is worth the wait.

Tell him you saw Rob Davison's 292 valve cover he did. Mine was brand new never installed but I'd suggest cleaning a used one as clean as possible before sending it.

I have a polishing lathe,what ever the polisher charges is not enough. Just a small project and you are covered it black grit from head to toe

sure looks great, what did he do or suggest you do to keep the gloss finish??

He didn't say but I didn't ask. It is one piece out of 5 finned aluminum pieces on the engine as it stands so I'll get plenty of practice keeping stuff shiny.

Outside of shipping back and forth the cost ended up being right at the same as buying a polished one.

I have spent hundreds of hours polishing parts and no where near done. I have found buying a polished part is usually "a good start". but I'm a little picky. They never seem to get the little nooks and craney's. Then they are impossible to keep clean when they are rough and turn black. Washers are the worst but my thumb is really shiney. I'm actually polishing my 292 blower plenum now.Well on break right now.

I've used ADAM'S POLISHES for years and found that using their METAL POLISH #1 and #2 is as good as I've gotten from a professional polisher and it keeps nearly perfect for months. I've done all sorts of aluminum and steel parts with them.

He did a great job on it as rough as the casting was. There are a couple of tiny casting flaws that he couldn't get but I don't think they will show anyhow. I'll probably end up sending my intake now so everything is polished on it.
