Voltage regulator removal

Hey group,

I'm looking for a write up on how to eliminate my voltage regulator and convert over to an alternator with a built in voltage regulator. Thanks, all you time and advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JD

Re: Voltage regulator removal

I would do a "copy & paste" for you but my computer is AFU & won't copy.

Check out: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...dd.php?t=119379

It's a very easy to understand write up, with pictures done by toddtheodd on 9/122/0004.

If that doesn't work use the search tool & search for "external to internal voltage regulator conversion", or words to that effect.

Re: Voltage regulator removal

I used the same thing... and... wait... oh yeah...

God... was that really 2004... Doesn't seem like that long ago. No wonder when people ask me about it I can't remember the answers. LOL!

Re: Voltage regulator removal

Here's the way I like to do it, it's basically the same except with an extra splice at the voltage reg wiring and the wire from the #2 terminal isn't jumped to the alt post. It puts the voltage sense wire at the alt main splice.

Re: Voltage regulator removal

Here's a page from my 69 Camaro color wiring diagrams I drew up a while back. I would imagine this would work on just about any late 60's, early 70's GM vehicle.

Im actually doing this RIGHT now today. I just had a question. Which wires do i jump on the alternator. From the diagram, i was going to jump #2 to power correct?

Also, is there a ground on the alternator. I dont see one. Just the post for the 12 volt and then the plug with the two wires.

Re: Voltage regulator removal

If you jump the wires at the regulator as shown you don't need to do any jumping at the alt. If you follow the #2 wire from the alt to the reg plug you'll notice that it's jumped to the red wire which goes to the circled area which is your alternator buss or junction connection that is where all you accessories pull power from, so you biggest voltage drop is at that point. The #2 terminal on the alt is the voltage sense wire and running it to the alternator buss connection would maintain peak voltage at that point (where you want it) Some simply jump #2 to the battery post on the back of the alt but that just maintains peak voltage at the alt and not the main splice so it wont perform as well. One of the best features of these alternators is their ability to monitor voltage remotely. HTH

Re: Voltage regulator removal

The alternator is grounded through the case so no ground is needed for the alt to work but if you have the ground wire present you could connect it to the threaded hole on the back of the alt this would give the radiator support another ground path if it's still connected there but not required for alt operation just adds redundancy to the rad support and front light circuits

I have the harness completely out of the truck, so i figured why not just rewire it.

Just giving options. I bought an M&H harness and kept the external voltage regulator in case I or someone wanted to return to stock (yeah right) so I just installed the plug. I think for some it might be a better solution to some of the splices I've seen some make?
