S10 Swap

Looking at doing a swap found a 1991 regular cab swb s10. Would it be the right length or does a lwb truck work better?

a long bed s10 is 1" longer than the AD wheelbase, but since the s10 ifs moves back slightly as the truck is lowered and the rear wheels move forward slightly as the truck is lowered, its pretty easy to make it line up well. this is a longbed s10

you can use any s10, its just a little more work.

on an ext cab you separate the frame at the factory joint (middle of the frame) and take out the extra length on the back half.

on a rcsb, its even easier (relatively speaking), you can take off the leaf springs and drill out the rivets in the front leaf perches, then move them back 8" (meaured along the floor, not measured along the angled frame rail). then squarely cut off the last 11" of the frame rail and flip them side to side, it moves the rear leaf perch 8" back. put the leafs back in and now you have a 116" wheelbase. doing this requires you to move the gas tank back also if you intend to keep the S10 tank.

in the project section, a guy named 62chevyII did this and has a how to but you cant see the pictures unless you have the "photobucket fix" browser add on. another member named gigamanx added the pictures to his flickr account, its not bad at all, we used that trick on my 65.

also, by saying you want an s10 frame you are inviting dissention, my advice is to try out the s10 swap sticky instead!

So could I use swb if the bed off the 3100 was shortned? Or would everything be easier with a lwb s10

you dont shorten the 3100 bed, in my opinion thats a terrible look for an AD. if you are starting with a rcsb you move the leaf perches back and flip the last 11 inched of the s10 from side to side and end to end and you end up with the right wheelbase.

The only way the shortened bed looks right with an AD is if you chop it and then drop the cab down over the frame with no running boards and the bottoms of the fenders trimmed so they end up even with the bottom of the cab/doors. I've helped build two of them over the years and they were nifty little trucks. To just shorten the box to fit the frame and leave it all tall makes it look pretty ungainly to most of us.
