700r4 to np205 question

I'm in the process of converting my 72 K2500 from tb350 to 700r4 mating to the np205. i know there is an output shaft available from several venders for the conversion.

My question is: why cant the existng 700 output shaft simply be cut down?

I have searched the forums, heck the whole net, and cannot find any reference anyone has tried or referenced this.

My 700r4 is a K case 92 vintage

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

If you cut the original output shaft you are cutting the splines off the shaft. That’s why you can not use the original 700 output shaft. If the original output shaft was splined to the governor provisioning you could cut the shaft but that’s not the case. I pay 60 bucks for the shorter output shaft. Ebay has it for around 125 with shipping. One more thing, when doing this conversion leave your transfer case in the stock location and move the engine crossmember forward.

Thanks for this info, i hadnt beeen able to find this on the web. and havent pulled the drivetrain from the truck to make measurements. I'm gathering as many parts before i take the truck down.

Also, yes. I am moving the engine forward. It looks like the best route to me

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

First pic shows the two output shafts. One on the left was an original 700 output shaft cut but will not work. The one on the right as stated above is splined to the governor provisioning.

Second pic shows a spacer that can be used between the trans and tc using the original output shaft but I don’t recommend this approach based on the stress that is applied to this area. If you go with this approach you must use the TC mount to the frame. If not I have seen the transmission case broke under stress. Thanks for listening, I provide real life experiences, anyone can provide web sites and links. YouTube and google is on everyone’s device

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

Have you purchased a 700r4 yet ?

The reason I ask, there is another thing to consider with the 700R4 and that’s the type of Valve body to use. You want the VB with the TCC shift valve provisioning. This allows the TCC to engage and disengage thru a shift valve and not electrically (IMO) Wiring the TCC solenoid thru a pressure switch using 4th gear oil is not the best scenario. TCC applies right after trans achieves 4th gear which makes town driving a consent “engage/disengage” of the TCC. Driving in the “D” range in town than why why have OD.

Yes, Picked it up yesterday. K case 92 vintage.

I appreciate the photos too. Just ordered the output shaft off ebay for 125.00 delivered.

Also, i didn't want the extra length of the spacer

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

When you install your output shaft check out the VB. I recommend you to use the VB with the TCC shift valve provisioning. While you have it apart now is the time to install the right VB. You will wish you did. I edited post #7 on VB recommendation

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

Here is the difference of type 1 VB and a type 2. Most likely your 1992 will have the type 2 VB with a AUX VB. In the pic the one on the left is the one you need it is a type 1 VB. See the difference. The type 2 VB has a white marking where the TCC shift valve train should be but is not. In the type 1 VB you will have to buy a transgo 700 lock up kit. 47 bucks. This kit provides the valve train and different springs to allow later shifts into 4th and TCC engagement. Best thing for our first gen blazers to have OD with TCC. No electric connections needed. Even though I ain’t from Texas this ain’t my first rodeo.

Next we can discuss the most important “the TV cable......”

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

It’s best to use the stock pan for clearance reasons for the front driveshaft. If you try and use a deeper pan it most likely will interfere with the front driveshaft. First pic

The pic below in the next post shows the new location of the column stock linkage bracket that bolts to the frame. See how it lines up with the trans linkage location. This is if you are using the stock column linkage

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

Notice the bracket on the frame has to move forward so the linkage will align. Reuse the upper bolt location and you will have to drill thru the frame for the bottom bolt for the bracket since it had to be moved forward. In the pic shows a sideways view. The bottom bolt in the pic is missing. The hole in the frame has not been drilled on this blazer yet

Re: 700r4 to np205 question

YoungPup1977- thanks for the advise, i'll talk with the fellow doing the rebuild for me about the VB, and am also using the stock pan. I had read about the front yoke clearance issues.

I'm currently looking for a 6 bolt dust cover for the K case also

There is one on eBay for 54.99 with free shipping. They are getting harder to fine.
