27 spline 700r4

Ok here’s another 27 spline 700r4 post the other month I purchased a 700r4 transmission not knowing there was two different ones (30 spline and 27 spline). Well after I bought it I went to google and read on how to count the splines and check the year and sure enough mine is a 84 27 spline. So everywhere I have read on here says the 27 spline has weak internals and should be swapped with a 30 spline. So my question is why can’t I just rebuild what I have with a heavy duty overhaul kit wouldn’t that make it better? Cause I really don’t want to buy another transmission.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

Depends on how you are planning on using the 700r4.
What are you putting it in ?

The difference is the input and the stator which are smaller in diameter.

The difference is not in purchasing a HD rebuild kit.

If you plan on using this trans make sure you use the correct TC. The 30 spline TC will fit right in the 27 spline trans but of course it will not work.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

The 700r4 trans gets a bad rap. Most the 700r4’s TV cable adjustments are done wrong and they burn up the 3/4 clutches. Most people don’t use the 700 because of this.

I don’t see any reason why you can not use this 27 spline transmission. I would prefer a later year 700 but you already got the one you have. Rebuild it and use it. If there are people installing a 200 into their trucks I am sure your 27 spline 700 will work fine

Re: 27 spline 700r4

If you are converting your 5.3 to a carb, the 700R4 would work. But if you are keeping the factory injection, you will have a difficult time connecting the TV cable and adjusting it correctly.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

Anybody locally looking for a 30 spline core or 2 I've got some sitting around. Nothing seriously wrong with them, just need freshening up. Getting ready to remove one from my 91 Suburban.

Sorry for the hijack

I plan keeping the Fuel injection... Their isn’t anybody that sells a kit so it can be hooked up and adjusted? And I do have a Th350 but I figured that the 700r4 would be better for the highway, and I’m not really trying to pay what the prices are around where I’m at for a 4L60E you can’t even get a POS that needs rebuilt for less than $600.

You do fabrications, maybe start fabbing up something for The TV cable to be used on fuel injection. Maybe a few bucks to be made here on this forum. Just a thought.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

The 30 spline or the 87 and up(If I remember right) also have a better designed valve body.

Not sure I would use the 700r4 on a fuel injected 5.3. You have to get the TV cable geometry right. Its not just a kick down cable like the TH350. It can burn up that 700 real quick it you don't get the cable right.

Do you think I’d be better off using the th350 I got or maybe selling the 700r4 and buying a th400?

Re: 27 spline 700r4

Simplicity wise the TH400 doesn't have a cable it just needs vacuum. It does have an electronic kick down sol, but it is not needed you can down shift manually if needed.

You already have to have the computer for the EFI, why not just put in a 4l60e or 4l80e. You can buy a used 4l60e fairly cheap now.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

Well truthfully where I’m at it’s not that cheap compared to the other transmissions. And I had bought a aftermarket harness and ecm and the trans controller will cost me a extra 6 or $700 more.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

I just did a google search and came up with this stuff. You might be able to add the TV Cable.

https://www.classicchevy.com/chevy-t...1955-1957.html

http://www.tvmadeez.com/ls1_cam/

Back to the original question if you can make the TV setup work. I would use the 700r4, if you know it is in good working order.

Re: 27 spline 700r4

Figured there was something to be able to attach the tv cable to this 5.3. It’s not the first time on this one.
No need to change it to a carb which would make no sense to do if you have fuel injection.

Either make one or spend the money they are asking. Over 200 bucks, they are sure proud of there cable and bracket. Everyone wants bow tie. Which I think are even more cash.

You may have to look into the flexplate, the 5.3 to 700r4 flexplate is different.
