Making some progress on BCKNBLK - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Since we are finished with Lee's '66 K10, I was able to pull my '66 K10 into my shop. I replaced the floor boards and kick panels a few years ago and BCKNBLK had been sitting outside for the past few years. Also, many parts were stolen when my shop was broken into back in December 2006.

In any case, I am installing sound mat on the entire interior of the cab, including the firewall to the underside of the dash and behind the fuel tank. I also installed an HEI distributor, new battery, underhood harnesses, underdash harness and fired the motor for the first time in over two years. It has a factory 327 and a transplanted Turbo 400.

I am also putting a factory automatic column, in place of the late sixties column that was installed by the previous owner. I am also replacing the auto shift linkage that was a cobbled up mess. I pulled the bench seat and I am installing a factory bench seat that I am having reupholstered.

I will keep updating the progress of bringing BCKNBLK back to life. Enjoy.

Here are a few pictures of the interior sheetmetal repairs. The welds have been cleaned up, seam seal applied and sound mat is being installed.

Thanks for the kind words...it is not my best work. I was trying my hand at panel replacement with my new Miller 175 MIG machine when I did this work three years ago, so I have honed my skills a bit since then.

For the best results I run .023 wire and CO2/Argon gas, to keep from blowing holes in the light gauge sheetmetal.

If you have honed your skills then I will let you do my next project. What you did in the pix looks great I don't see anything that needs honing.

I run the same wire size and gas setup. It really works good.

I have been slowly pecking away at the punch list on BCKNBLK. I have installed a factory "hard pipe" upper radiator hose assembly. I also fabricated a frame stand-off mount for the 4x4 transfer case shifter. It was required because the previous owner installed a Turbo 400, so the factory shifter assembly could no longer mount to the original SM420 transmission case, that these trucks came from the factory with.

I am also installing a factory frame-mounted automatic shifter linkage assembly, to correct the mess by the previous owner.

I am about halfway done with the sound mat in the cab, from under the dash to the backside of the cab.

I am repairing the high hump tranny cover, but replacing some rusty spots and a few extra holes drilled in it, as well as, infilling the factory opening for the SM420 shifter and elongating the opening for the 4x4 transfer case shifter.

I had the factory seat reupholstered in black, to match the black carpet, as well as, had some carpeted kick panels covers made.

I think most on this board know how important it is but I just have to repeat how much some of these pics like the pics of the corner welds shown above help guys like me who are just starting out. The info you guys provide is very helpful and informative for those of us who are dieing to learn this stuff in order to complete our own projects.

I noticed the date on the photos of the floor pans are April, 2005. That was my first effort at doing floor pans and kick panels. Now I match every seam and break, to be like the original. BCKNBLK has been on hold for almost five years, so I could do other projects. I will have her on the road in a few months, maybe sooner.

Here is a few photos of the stand-off bracket for the factory 4x4 shifter. It was necessary since the original SM420 has been replaced with a Turbo 400 and the original 4x4 shifter mounted to the 4-speed tranny housing. It is now complete and mocked up in the truck, but I don't have photos of it yet since I am on daddy-duty for the next few weeks, so shop time is limited. This is just the piece that kicks off the frame. The other part of the assembly has the factory 4x4 shifter and pivot.

This piece started out as a factory SM420 tranny cross member, with one end cut off, widened to meet the top and bottom flanges of the 4x4 frame rail and a flat plate welded on to provide a flat, solid mounting surface for the modified 4x4 transfer case shifter mechanism.
