I found the coolest r/c car body at the hobby shop last week. Proline makes a 1980 K5 (and K10 truck) in 1/10 scale. Having more than a few R/C cars from my youth I got to thinking what to put the body on. I've got a Blackfoot and King Blackfoot monster trucks, but both are 2wd only. Plus the big tires give it a cartoonish look. I thought more and decided to cannibalize one of the Nylint Jeep 1/18 scale r/c rock crawlers we have. The Nylint's are 4wd, locked f/r with beadlocked MT Baja Claw tires. Articulation is pretty good, plus you can change the gearing at the axles for high/low operation. Problem is, the scale is off. 1/18 to 1/10 is a jump.

The first pic is of the body from proline's site. Next is the body sitting on the nylint with the old jeep body in place to get a sense of scale. Third pic is of the chassis minus the jeep body, but with modifications made to the control arm links to increase the wheel base to fit the K5 body. (width is right on the money!)

Keep this in mind, the goal here is a somewhat realistic 1/10 scale K5 rock crawler. Not a haul tail, jump 10 feet and haul again, but a slow technical crawler.

Anybody that's been around r/c crawling will say the Nylint is junk, not hobby grade quality. That's true. Nylints are no longer sold, they did have some durability issues. But since you bought it at wally world, you just took it back and got another. But I had one not being used, plus we got a spare for parts and the price was right. Heck, the body cost about $10 less than what the Nylint cost so you can't expect too much from it. That being said, with a few minor mods these things can crawl rocks pretty well. My son and I ran ours down a 100ft section of 5-10" river rock in our front yard and they just motored right over them. The key (like driving on 1/2 ton axles and big tires) is knowing when to stop. If a wheel gets jammed up you can't hammer on them that's when stuff breaks on these things.

Still, if I had a spare $500 laying around I'd snag an Axial crawler from the local hobby shop and go nuts. Fact is I don't have cash flying out like that and sooner or later my real K5 is going to need an engine. Got to save up for that. So the Nylints going to be it for now.

I got a busy weekend planned, but intend on spraying the body to match my K5 next week. Minus the rust of course! Then it's time to mount the body and go hit the rocks!

looks like a fun way to wheel without spending a grand every time you break something.
I am tempted to get a proline '72 C10 body now. they come in long and shortwide flavor.

It's fun but like most, it's addicting. I've already had the r/c sickness once having once sunk $1,000 in a 1/10 scale stock car. It was/still is fast but needs some seriously smooth pavement to run on or it's worthless. Looking over at www.rccrawler.com I see a ton can get sunk into custom frames, axles, brushless motors and controls....

I'm keeping my need to go bigger and better in check. Just to get the body on and play around.

I picked up some body mounts after work yesterday. I needed to make a bracket to get the front mounts more forward than the base of the windshield, but that was easy. Now to drill the holes, mask the body and get to painting.

I've got to stop going to the hobby shop though. He's got a scratch built crawler for sale with a stick chassis and Clod axles for $300. Not really scale looking, but extremely well built and capable. Must say noooo.

A RTR stick for $300...Ill take it!!!!!!!!!!!! They arent scale but you wont believe what they can do. I always hated they until I saw one in action on my home course (yes Im such an addict that I had rock hauled in and built a rather large course)

Here's a little progress... got the body masked off and sprayed white. Then I spent some time carving the body away from the extra material Lexan bodies come with. Some things I realized in the process. 1. I need some fresh x-acto knife blades. 2. Lexan bodies are thicker than they used to be. 3. A utility knife is NOT an ideal tool for cutting lexan bodies. 4. Next time I'lll cough up the bucks for some lexan scissors.

The body looks good but the wheel openings look like edward scissor hands did it. Plus I've got a couple of good slices made to my fingers. Anyway, on with the pics!

I've got some detail work to do like the window mouldings and decals. Then It will be ready to ROCK!
