front bumper mount broken off
Hi. When I pulled my truck out of the field it had been sitting in for decades, I managed to rip off a couple of the bumper mounts (the circled part in pic, both sides). I have a replacement bumper to put on, what would be the best way to fix the mounts? Make new brackets and weld them on? Anybody else had to do this? Thanks. Stole the pic from AngryPirate.

Re: front bumper mount broken off
I've seen replacement frame horns welded on. But if you dont' have them available, then I am sure that you could fabricate a mount.

Re: front bumper mount broken off
There's a pair of frame ends in the for sale section. Item #11 on his list.

Re: front bumper mount broken off
My truck is a 61, I wasn't clear in my post. I'm parting out another 1961, out in a field this weekend, can't tell from the pics of the truck I have seen, but the frame horns (if that is what this piece is) could be OK. Cut them off with a cordless sawzall, does that sound like how to go about the harvesting?

Re: front bumper mount broken off
For some reason, I'm having trouble visualizing the process of replacing the frame horns. I think it is because I've never had to do any kind of work on a frame before. Anybody got pics? Specifically, will a sawzall do the trick for cutting? Should the cut be straight up and down, or in a step? Where to do the cut? For the welding, I'm suspecting an arc welder is in order? My MIG has trouble with 1/8" plate.. Fortunately my next door neighbour is a professional welder, and he was out welding in his back yard on the weekend. Hopefully he could just carry his welder over to my driveway. I'm sure he would work for beer.
I found this thread, but it is for later years. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=425663

Re: front bumper mount broken off
I would just cut it straight which was what I did with mine. there is no structural matters other than the bumper and you don't want it to snap off at the weld if it gets whacked

Re: front bumper mount broken off
Measure twice, cut once!!
Just go straight up and down.. if you feel the need for more weld strength, you can cut them at an angle, which gives more contact area for the reinstall. Cut back a few inches from the minting tabs, where the frame area contours are flat and easy to work with. There are two things in life where penetration is of the utmost importance: welding is the other one. If your mig isn't up to the task, weld it from the front side, then weld it along the back side of the seam too.

Thanks. Good tip about welding from both sides.

Re: front bumper mount broken off
Vetnat:
The other trick I use when I am worried about penetration of the weld is to bevel both sides with a grinder before I start any welding. The the weld tends to fill the "V" I created on each side with the bevel giving you a nice flat weld that penetrates. I am just a weekend warrior, not a welder, so I would be interested what the welding pros think about that strategy as well. Regards, Steve New Orleans |
