Electric fan question

I’m going with a 1995 Ford Taurus 3.8L fan and Volvo 850 relay. Anyone have this setup? I’m worried that the relay is gonna be to small for the amp draw.

I have a diagram I found on another forum, but it doesn’t include AC trinary or any diodes. Does anyone have a diagram they can share?

Instead of a dual temp switch, the ecu will turn low on at 195 and high on at 215.

Re: Electric fan question

There’s a lot of info online stating the fan for the Volvo is the same fan as the Taurus with the difference being the shroud. Bet the relay is going to work great.

Re: Electric fan question

Have you seen how much draw the fan consumes when it comes on? Iirc it was real high, kinda made me go a different way.
Good luck!

I have been looking. I’ve seen numbers all over the place. I think that if the fan is the same as the volvo fan then the Volvo relay should work and the truck alternator should be able to handle the amp draw.

I did test the fan today with a car battery and man does it pull air! I was surprised.

Re: Electric fan question

I do have another question. Is it possible to have the AC request to turn on fan but the fan be turned off at low temperatures or when going over 35mph? Or is this a bad idea?

Yes, that is where the trinary switch come into play. Have it ground the high speed relay and it will kick the fan on when the head pressure gets high enough, then when you're on the road above 40mph or so, the pressure will be low because of the airflow and the fan will be off.

Re: Electric fan question

That relay should work, I have the Windstar fans which everyone said drew some crazy high amperage but I have been running a 40 amp relay on them for a couple months with no issue. I have both set to turn on at the same time so it must not be all that high.

Sorry for the highjack but will this trinary work with a single Mercury Cougar/Ford T-Bird/Lincoln Mark VIII 2-speed fan? If so, how? I'm currently running a 5.3/4L60E with a PSI harness and a single heavy duty relay and getting ready to install vintage air.

thanks!

I was just gonna have it activate low speed. If that isn’t enough air, I’ll have it activate high speed.

I think with a dual speed fan you need at least 2 relays and you cannot power both the low speed and high speed at the same time. If you let that happen you’ll burn up your fan in a hurry. That is why I went the Volvo route. I am under the impression that the Volvo relay will deactivate the low when the high is active.

Power is directed by grounding one of the middle wires.

Re: Electric fan question

You can wire like this without a Volvo 2 speed fan relay.
