how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

I see there are tons of products out there to stop and convert rust on metal. My question is. What or how to apply it to the inside of a tailgate? I can do all things under the sun to the outside to slow it down or transform it on a used/previous owned tailgate but my problem is its not gonna do me any good if I cant treat the inside. I need any suggestions I can get on how to pull this off or if it is even possible. And once again THANKS for helping me out.

I used Eastwoods Internal Frame Coat in many places like this. I can't speak to the longevity, but I do like the product. I has a 24 inch hose to get inside panels.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

I understand the concern!

This is the only rust my door showed on the outside skin with a little pitting on the bottom backside:

...and this was inside the door....

I have a rust free gate from NM, I like the idea of that eastwood stuff.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

That eastwood product looks like a good bet.
I've used Rustcheck on mine for years with absolute no 'rust creep'.
What I like about the rustcheck (and perhaps the eastwood) applicator is the ability to insert the small nozzle (similar to a WD40 red nozzle) into the weld gap areas of the tailgate from either side which allows me to spray across and down through the bottom.
There are enough holes and gaps to do this from several places...including even past and around the tailgate handle.
All Good

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

I've also used this stuff from eastwood. It flows very easily and has good coverage. I've thought about closing up any "leak" areas from the tailgate, pour a quart or so in, tape up the opening with some aluminum foil tape, and shake it, turn it in all directions, etc to coat the inside of the tailgate. Let it dry a few days, then do the same thing with some thinned out rust encapsulator as a top coat?

I wondered about doing this too. Now I'm up in the air with the other stuff from Eastwood. Guess doing both is cheaper than try to find another halfway decent tailgate not dented to crap.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

It's very expensive. I think it's 100 bucks a gallon but it goes really far. I've used it on a lot of panels and still have half a gallon left.

Rust encapsulator has gotten extremely $$$ too, it's like $140/gal now!!!

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

All you had to do is ask me I know how you can get rid of your rust issues, load all these parts that are a potential rust hazard into the back of your truck drive them to 1107 East Mountain st. drop them off and go home, WALA!! Now you no longer have any rust issues

What, you mean this original paint New Mexico beauty? Doesn't even have a ding in it. I think I'll keep it for now

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

I used one of these undercoating sprayers to apply POR 15 inside of the gate and lift door on my Burban (and just about everywhere else). I drilled some one inch access holes so I could reach as much as possible with the 2 foot flexible wands, then I plugged the holes with some factory repop plugs. You could spray just about anything with the sprayer including Fluid Film. I have some more information in my Working Man's Burban thread if your interested.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

ho455 I wont have to drill the 1 inch holes. There are enough rust spots in think in the bottom to do it. lol Thanks for info. Will check it out for sure.

As long as there aren't enough holes to make it look like a prerunner gate.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

got the frame coating today from eastwood. my friends that drive the brown truck left it on my door step for me. hopefully weather will warm up and can spray the inside of tailgate in next few days. thanks again for all the info.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

got it sprayed today. worked awesome. I learned QUICKLY to pay attention to how much of the hose was in or out of the tailgate after the spray nozzle sprayed 360 degrees hitting me in the face.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

Glad to hear it worked for you too. I ended up wrapping tape around the nozzle a couple of inches from the end to remind myself I was almost to the end of the wand. I sprayed POR15 so I was completely suited up in Tyvex and face shield. I didn't want to be wearing POR15 for the next couple of weeks. But even so I got some on myself and on the Burban in places it wasn't wanted.

Re: how to stop inside of tailgate rust ?

That's like the old Italian car remedy for rusting. Soak coarse sawdust in oil for several days, drain oil and pack the sawdust inside the door panels. Once or twice a year add more oil. Supposed to keep rust at bay, but makes for slippery sills and messy floorboards.

didn't take any pics of how it looked when got it but was covered with mud and dirt from where it was stored outside. Washed it off then started to lightly go over it with angle grinder with wire brush and rust holes started to cave in. Put eastwood rust treatment on outside then got the info on the frame version so put on inside and here is end result. Well top pic was pre treatment. Not to bad.
