4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

I've been building a '55 Stepside shortbed for the wife for the last year. This is definitely a budget build since I'm going to end up double what she wants to spend on this truck. Things are going well, but cold weather is coming and I'm looking for things I can do in the basement rather than the detached garage. It's a little early in the project to start this thread so things will go probably go slow at first. However, I'm ready to buy some parts after 3 days living on the Internet, so I thought I'd at least get this started. I hope it becomes something others can look back on and learn from.

Background: This tranny was originally from a 1991 S-10 with a 6 cyl (4.3L) and has a "K" case. It will mate up to a 383 small block that has a Comp Cams CS XE286H-10 cam, 9.5:1 compression, 1.6 rockers, balanced, ported hump heads, headers, Edelbrock 1406 carb, 4:11 rear. This will be a show & go truck, mostly for cruizin', but when she hits the loud pedal she'll want it to GO!

I'll know more after the teardown, but here's my grocery list so far:

PART / PART# / COST
1) Master Kit 35995B $94.27
2) 2-4 Band 35002 $10.92
3) Thrust Washer Kit 35670 $8.49
4) Filter 35920 $4.88
5) Bushing Kit 35602A $17.63
6) Corvette Servo 35952 $16.95
7) Accumulator Kit 77998-03K $14.10
8) 3rd Accum. ck ball & seat 35335B $7.47
9) Deluxe 13-vane pump 35764CDK $35.64
10) Pressure Regulator Spring 77917-08 $2.89
11) Transgo Shift Kit TRG-700-2-3 $74.95
12) "The Beast" Sun Shell A74624A $51.42
13) Torque Converter 2200-2600 $134.00

VENDOR:
1 THRU 10) transmissionpartsusa.com
11) Summit
12) bulkpart.com
13) Roadrunner Converter

NOTES:
1) Master Kit has steels & raybestos frictions.
2) Band is a Borg-Warner.
7) These are the 1-2, 3-4 Accumulators, and they are pinless.
13) Not solid on this torque converter choice.

TRYING NOT TO BUY (but may need):
14) Valve Body Separator Plate
******************************************
Since this is my first 700R4 (and 2nd tranny by myself), I am looking for guidance (even if it's a slap upside the head). If you have experience on vendors, parts, price, missing stuff, etc., I'd like to hear it.

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks for the reply, CB. Great tips!

I'll get the rebuild kit without clutches and plates, then buy the Alto reds. I see that the Transgo 700-2-3 has a replacement boost valve, and I think it's a .500. If that's OK, don't bother to respond. I'll also get the sprag and the unbreakable pump ring kit. (Unbreakable is good!)

I've decided to disassemble the tranny before ordering to see what I bought for $80 (the Craigslist tranny purchase price). Might be a short while. I'm working on the sedan's 4-wheel discs today. Retirement is great!

Thanks Again,
Bob

EDIT: I actually bought the Master Rebuild Kit (Transmission Parts USA p/n 35002, $94.27) with clutches because I needed all the clutches except the 3-4's. See Clinebarger's post #4, below.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

The .472" boost valve is more of a personal preference. The kit in my link is just for the 3-4 clutches & steels. you still need the forward, overrun, reverse input & low/reverse clutches out of the rebuild kit, NO need for special frictions on the rest of the trans.

I upgrade the the 3-4 clutches on every trans I build, Behind stock stuff I use this http://www.oregonperformancetransmis...y_Code=700R4RB

More great info! Yeah, I figured out that I'd be missing the other clutch packs right after the "Edit" key disappeared.

The $34 Alto 9-disc clutch pack with selective steels looks like a good compromise. Cheap Insurance.

The old Transgo 700-2-3 video shows a boost valve, but that was an old version of the kit. The current kit does not have a boost valve, per Glenn at Transgo. I'll order the .472 boost valve as well.

Most likely you will need about 200 to 300 dollars worth of special tools to do a proper overhaul on it. Its not a simple transmission to do.

Good to hear from you, dicer. Look for some of the tools I'll build as I progress. First on the block is the holding fixture that will bolt to my engine stand, probably followed by the piston clamp. I'm a Rube Goldberg Jedi Master!

The install that concerns me the most is the input shaft teflon seals. I've read things about heating and cooling, duct tape, mylar and hose clamps. (Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY! ) This one might mean a trip to Vern's Transmissions, a local guy...

Thanks,
Bob

Ah and that is just part of the fun, you'll see. The fixture is a good idea. I used saw horses and 2x4's for mine, next time I'll do what your doing. Keep me posted on the progress.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

I'm always impressed at how powerful this forum is. After my first posts I received a PM from a fellow board member asking if I wanted a drawing of his trans holding fixture. He also asked how close I was to Sharonville, Ohio. I immediately answered that I was only 20 miles away, and that I certainly would like to have the drawing. A couple of emails later, we were on the phone. He will be traveling from Pennsylvania to visit his son this weekend, and will be stopping by my house to see my project. He also will be giving me some components to make my trans holding fixture, and will be loaning me some of his other rebuild tools, to be returned to his son when I'm finished. I don't know what to say... I'd "turn him in" here, but I haven't gotten his approval.

This has caused me to move my project ahead because I want a second set of eyes to look at the guts. And so it begins...

I started off by taking 10 minutes to make my first tool, the lip seal installer. This is a 5" piece of 1/4" copper tubing with a .075" coat hangar crushed into one side and a .045" piece of solid wire crushed into the other. I also slightly crushed the wires themselves at the peak of the wire to thin them slightly, but ensured they had no sharp edge. There you have it -- a $30 tool.

Here is the patient. It's a Craigslist find. See initial post for specifics.

I know it probably doesn't matter, but I took a pic of the orientation of the seal retainer here. I've since removed the pump bolts and they are all the same length.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Since I haven't borrowed the tools yet I decided to string the trans up like a slaughtered pig and drain the blood out. Worked great!

Up on the bench. Please excuse the nifty fixture, but I want it level so the balls stay in place when I lift the valve body tomorrow.

Here's my documentation picture before I rip the valve body out. That's it for tonight.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Might not be a bad idea to get a ATSG manual for it ,I got 1 from my nephew and it's a real detailed manual. It shows how to check all the clutch pak clearances and such.I allso looked up some videos on youtube,I tore apart and rebuilt the trans with nothing but common hand tools.

Good ideas, Kaycee. I think a copy of this manual is coming with the borrowed tools. I've heard it's great, and I'll get a look at it over the weekend. I also have an '88 Vette Service manual with about 50 pages of info on the 4L60.

I'm sure that we've looked at a lot of the same youtube videos. Ain't the internet great?

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

The transmission is apart and I'm taking the case to my buddy's shop today to use his cleaning machine. I've continued reading and came upon this article:

http://www.montecarloss.com/SSThunder/drivetrain.html

It's a long article, so here's the info I'm interested in: In the section entitled "700R4 Overhaul Tips" it says I should do the following because my trans came from behind a V-6 (1991, 4.3L):
1) Replace the 3-4 apply fingers in the aluminum drum with the V-8 version (allows 1 more clutch & steel).
2) Remove the aluminum plate & top overrun steel plate from the forward clutch and replace with V-8 version (allows 1 more forward clutch & steel).
3) Replace the reverse input piston with a shorter V-8 version (allows 1 more clutch & steel).

Is this necessary? (I haven't taken the subassemblies apart yet, so I don't know how many clutches are there.)

I'll post more pics once I find out how to make them larger.

4.3L 4L60Es are built just like the V8 version exept the things I covered in your other thread, The "V6 4L60E" that these articles are referring to are put behind 2.8L & 3.4L engines. Im sure you will find 5 forward clutches & 6 3-4 clutches. Go ahead and disassemble the input drum & find out.

Will do, as soon as my parts get here next week. Thanks for helping me sort out the good info from the not so good.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Update: My "Mystery Guest" from the forum showed up on Saturday. He, his son and I talked for several hours, and he imparted much knowledge he had gained from doing 150-or-so 700R4s over the last several years. He left a full set of tools here for my use, including piston spring compressors, custom snap ring pliers for that nasty ring between the front and rear assemblies, a servo extractor, a large modified screwdriver for removing the large case rings, a couple of metric taps and a front and rear bushing. Also in the care package he gave me a few extra input shaft seals in case I broke one, some selective washers for the input assembly, and ATSG and ATRA manuals. There are several other goodies in the box that escape me right now. (How thankful do you think I am?)

We inspected everything, disassembled the input drum contents and found there were no teeth on a few of the 3-4 clutches, and one was broken radially. The timing on this rebuild is definitely right on.

The case is back, cleaned, primered, and I'm between coats of paint right now. I'll be back with pictures soon. Bob

I guess that's my hint that this topic has been covered (even though the links don't take you anywhere you'd want to go).

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Sorry Stich. I should have just said "thank you". I clicked on the "Bradley Transmission Service" link last night and a pop-up told me I was the "Nov. 7th Ohio Winner", followed by malicious software detection. Did it 3 times - same result. This link worked OK this morning, but this afternoon I'm the "Nov. 8th Ohio Winner". One of the site sponsors is tossing malicious software at the user.

Since I know I have great anti-virus software, I then clicked on the "...full thread..." link and it took me to the Bangshift main page, but it didn't tell me where to go. I finally figured out the material was under the "Tech Stories" tab, under "Driveline", 17th item down. Clicked on that, then on the "full thread" link and I was back at the Bangshift mainpage. Do these links work for anyone else?

Thanks, SkeksisNV. You were able to see the full thread of photos? This is what I get (see attachment):

Note the "bradleystrans.com" url. If I hit the "OK" or the "X", I get the spiel that I won, and the malicious software indication.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

On with the build. Here's the painted case:

Of course, the tailshaft housing, servo cover and governor cover are painted as well. Pretty nice holding fixture from the "Mystery Man", huh? (Please ignore the junk behind the case.)

My package from Oregon Transmissions came yesterday, and the one from transmissionpartsusa.com came today. The Master Overhaul Kit is a "Toledo Trans-Kit". This, and all other parts appear to be high quality. We'll see. I did not need a new separator plate. I did change some components from my original list. If anyone is interested I'll post the updated list.

Reassembly begins tomorrow.

Yea, I never saw that image. May want to run some mal-ware program, check for some adware that may have gotten by your scanner.
