Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

Very nice work on the truck! Do you still have the old steel wheels and caps that were on it, looks like 9.75x16.5 camper special wheels?

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

Great truck and the work looks great. I love the 73 GMC's. In the pics from the 70's it looked like the truck had the tool storage box on the drivers side. Most of the time it is rusted away though!!

I wish I did....I sold 4 of the 5 wheels that I had, and my father threw the hub caps out back in the 80's. ( I could have strangled him!)

I've thought about putting that type of rim back on....especially since there doesn’t seem to be many after market wheels that I like.

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

You should do it! Search for "camper special" on craigslist and you'll find trucks with them still on the rear.

Thanks

It did have the tool box in the original bed. The toolbox door rotted out twice and In 1986 the wheel wells on the bed were in bad shape.

I found a local Chevy dealer that had just finished setting up a coffee truck and had a spare bed setting around.

So I scored a brand new bed for $400.

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

After checking out a post on TAILGATE BANDS, I was inspired to dig up my original.

Looks like I'm going to make the nessesary modifications to make it work on the '86 gate.

The chrome on the GMC letters is still in mint shape. I guess that says something for the plating process back then.

They're actually the original panels for that truck with a little bit of resto work.

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

I disassembled the panels, cleaned the wood grain with paint thinner, then Pledge. Cleaned the main panels, then sprayed them with SEM color coat. I was lucky that all the woodgrain in the truck was in descent shape. I'm pretty sure that you can't get them aftermarket

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

When you blast the cab, how do you handle the windows, or are the trucks already stripped down? I'm looking into media blasting the top half of my burb in prep for paint, but it'll be done only on the outside, not in the door jambs or interior.

Re: 1973 Gmc Cab Rebuild

If you do media blasting or soda blasting you don't need to be concerned about your glass or chrome.
