Re: 59 under construction

never seen that before but I would say, if it doesn't create a vibration, I would pull it back some so it doesn't polish the pinion seal up or cause dirt to be forced into the pinion seal area.
2 ways of looking at greasing a U joint, some will say just a couple of grease gun pumps until the seals start to bulge. this may be hard to do because all 4 bearing caps will not usually get grease at exactly the same time. others will say pump the grease in until there is clean grease coming out at every seal. that way you know each bearing actually received grease and also the old dirty grease is cleansed by the new grease pushing the old grease out.
personally I am in the second group who usually gets grease everywhere but has u joints that last longer. I also clean the grease off nicely after each lube job. I would say, however, that the first school of thought is a good one for ball joints and tie rods that have nicely sealed rubber boots. most have a pin hole in them though so they get the same treatment and most have water that comes out of the rubber before the grease comes out. my 03 avalanche is still running the original ball joints and tie rods with 260,000 km on the truck so it can't be that bad for things to be "over greased"

maybe just my imagination but I would think the sock would fling out and start looking like a frisbee when it gets wet.

He lives in California- he'll never have to worry about rain

well yes and no , original color but somebody did repaint parts of it ,
I was looking for a 54-55 truck ,when I found this one on craigs list , brought it from a guy that just brought it from the original owner, He just flipped it to make $$$$$ off it ? I paid a fair price for it , been happy ever since .
