Truck not starting when hot
I have a small block 350. After I drive the truck for a little while and it gets hot and then I tern it off it is hard to get it to start back up again. I can usually get it to start back up by giving it a good amount of fule but this time I just couldn't get it to start untill it coold down for about 2 hours. I will admit that I might have flooded the engine trying to start it. It will turn over but would not start.

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Try holding the pedal to the floor while you try to start it...?

Re: Truck not starting when hot
I have a rochester quadrajet. I don’t know wat my initial timing is. I tried doing my own timing a while back but I could not get it to remain consistent. It seemed to change every time I started it up. So I took it to a shop and they did it for me.
Here is the link to the thread I started about my timing a while back http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=718857 Last edited by forestb; 04-22-2018 at 12:10 AM. |

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Just a thought. Could it be vapor lock or would that only happen while driving or when overheating?

Re: Truck not starting when hot
I did a little peaking around today and noticed that my fule line is about half an inch from one of my header tubes. It is a braided stainless line. Could that be the problem?

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Try a phenolic spacer under the carb. Sometimes the fuel boils in the bowls above the intake. Phenolic or wood. Best of luck to ya

Re: Truck not starting when hot
That is way to close for a fuel line. I think you have a vapor lock issue and need to work on isolating your fuel system from heat. A spacer under the carb helps. They make one for a quadrajet that is about a 1/4" thick that was a factory part. Been a long time and dont remember the application. I dont like a fuel line any closer than 4 inches from the exhaust and use heat wrap anywhere it is less than that.

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Ok thank I will try both those things. Does the phenolic spacer just keep the carb away from the manifold so the heat does not transfer? Would my fule line being so close to the header also cause me to get bad gas mileage?
How thick of one would you all recommend? I have an aluminum intake manifold does that make a difference? Last edited by forestb; 04-23-2018 at 12:09 PM. |

Re: Truck not starting when hot
If cranking speed is ok, look to a fuel issue. B12 sprayed in the carb then crank is what I'd try.
Let's remember millions of these things were built and worked. What's different about this one? |

Re: Truck not starting when hot
why B12 there is nothing wrong with my truck's nerve and blood cells and it has plenty of DNA from what I can tell
The carb is fairly new so it should be clean. First I am going to try and move the fuel line away from the header and wrap it in heat rap. If that does not do the trick I might try the carb spacer. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I will keep you posted. |

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Next time it has trouble starting, check your choke. Sometimes they get off and close while the motor is still warm. Most of these motors don't need choke once they have any warmth in them.

Pop the air cleaner lid off and see what the choke blade is doing.

Re: Truck not starting when hot
I don't know what truck this is, but check to see if the gas cap is suppose to be vented and it is working.

Re: Truck not starting when hot
Took my truck to a local classic car mechanic this week. They took a look at the fuel lines and didn’t think that was a problem. It started fine for them every time so they could not diagnose the problem. They felt like it was turning over slowly so they tried a new battery to see if it was the battery or the starter. They determined it was the battery. It is kind of annoying sense the battery is not that old. They tested to see if there was any kind of load on the battery and there was not. It may just be that the truck has been sitting around not getting driven less than once a month. They checked the timing and it was a little fast so they fixed it. I guess I will just drive it until I have another problem. Maybe have it towed to them if it won’t start.
