Just a thought, you should check to make sure the vacuum advance canister will hold a vacuum. If it leaks, its bad. I once had one go bad and had the same issues as you describe. If the can leaks then you have a double dose of bad drivability and poor mileage due to the leak at high vacuum levels and no vacuum advance to help drivability.
